The University of Texas at Austin has released supplemental essay prompts for the 2026-2027 admissions year. UT Austin, the home of the Longhorns, has become an increasingly popular destination for academically ambitious students around the world. With an acceptance rate that continues to dwindle each year, UT Austin is the pride and joy of the University of Texas system.

To earn admission to this R1 private research university, students applying to the Class of 2031 must respond to three 250-300-word essay questions.

2026-2027 University of Texas Essay Topics and Questions

1. Why are you interested in the major you indicated as your first-choice major? (Required)

This prompt is a relatively straightforward “Why This Major?” essay in which you should use every last word to articulate how you intend to pursue your singular hook on UT Austin’s campus. And for those of you who are wondering, your singular hook is the highly unique, often small, and community-oriented pursuit that informs every aspect of your college application. It could be the chemistry research you’re conducting at the local community college, the advocacy cause you’re forwarding at the local municipal level, the sustainability initiative you’re piloting at your school, you name it!

In 300 words, a competitive UT Austin applicant will use this prompt as an opportunity to describe how their singular hook will inform their academic trajectory at UT Austin. Use this essay to provide admissions officers with a game plan for taking advantage of the educational resources on campus and in your chosen department that will allow you to pursue your singular hook to the fullest extent possible.

2. Think of all the activities — both in and outside of school — that you have been involved with during high school. Which one are you most proud of and why?

(Guidance for students: This can include an extracurricular activity, a club/organization, volunteer activity, work, or a family responsibility.) (Required)

In this 250-300-word response, a competitive UT Austin applicant will write about a particular activity, classroom experience, or extracurricular pursuit that involves their singular hook without overlapping with any experiences detailed in the Common App Personal Statement or any other supplemental materials. 

To make this response as compelling as possible, consider zeroing in on a specific story, anecdote, or dialogue, instead of highlighting a cliché experience, such as scoring the game-winning point, relating an intimate moment with a grandparent, or describing how music or travel changed your life. These “third-rail” essay topics should be avoided at all costs.

3. Please share background on events or exceptional circumstances that you feel may have impacted your high school academic performance.

If your response to this question is similar to one of the Common App Personal Essays, feel free to simply copy and paste the important parts of your essay here. (Optional)

Don’t take UT Austin at their word that you can simply get out of this prompt by copying and pasting Personal Statement excerpts. If you don’t have any gaps in your academic performance to account for, don’t force the prompt and write about an insignificant experience that wastes the time of your application reader. In such an example, this prompt need not be answered. For example, should you write about the time you called out sick one day? No. But should you have experienced significant adversity, discrimination, or family emergencies that impacted your transcript or might account for a gap in your performance, write about that here.

Perhaps you’re an underrepresented minority applicant whose experience was impacted by racism or discrimination. By all means, use this prompt as an opportunity to take advantage of the Roberts Loophole and articulate how your identity has influenced your classroom experiences. Perhaps you experienced an illness or family emergency that significantly impacted your performance. Admissions officers want to see that you can write eloquently about challenges you’ve faced to demonstrate your growth and perspective. But if you haven’t experienced such significant challenges, we who are big proponents of writing every optional essay classify this one as an exception to the rule. So, leave this one blank in such circumstances.
