Texas A&M University Supplemental Essay Prompts: 2026-2027
Texas A&M University has released its supplemental essay prompts for the Class of 2031. Students applying this year must respond to two required essay prompts, one with a 750-word limit and one with a 250-word limit, in addition to four short-answer questions, each with a 600-character limit. The university prefaces these questions with the following:
If your Common App essay already answers one of our prompts, you may paste that response directly into the designated field.
However, should you take Texas A&M at their word that you won’t be penalized for failing to come up with original content for all prompts in the supplement? Absolutely not! You should respond to each and every question with new information. But what should go into these responses? We’ll unpack below.
2026-2027 Texas A&M University Required Essay Prompts
The following essay prompts are required of all Texas A&M applicants:
1. Tell us your story. What unique opportunities or challenges have you experienced throughout your high school career that have shaped who you are today? (750 word limit)
750 words is a whole lot of real estate devoted to a question often asked on college applications, one that boils down to, “Tell us the personal origin story singular hook.” The singular hook is essentially that one thing that makes you tick, the pursuit you’ve devoted the most time to outside of the classroom. In your response (which should come as close to 750 words as possible to demonstrate your enthusiasm for Texas A&M), your goal is to articulate an opportunity or challenge related to your hook that has contributed to your growth as a scholar, student, and human being.
Some potential examples include the setback you experienced while conducting or assisting with research in a niche field, or the life-changing conversation you had with a member of your community while volunteering for a nonprofit. If you choose to focus on a challenge, you might consider reflecting on how your status as an underrepresented minority has shaped your academic or intellectual life, thereby invoking the Roberts Loophole. This is the exception to the 2023 SCOTUS ruling outlawing Affirmative Action that allows for race to be considered when it’s presented in written material submitted in applications.
No matter the direction you choose for your response, your goal is to present a compelling narrative that tugs at your reader’s heartstrings. Always strive to show, rather than tell, any point you’re trying to make. Any student can claim they’re a history buff. Few can, for example, highlight a specific day their love of the discipline blossomed while participating in a historical reenactment in their neighborhood (as part of the pursuit of their hook). And with 750 words to fill, it is well-advised to present several of these anecdotes to illustrate the depth of your commitment.
2. Describe a life event which you feel has prepared you to be successful in college. (250 words)
If the first prompt probed an overall academic or political trajectory, this 250-word prompt calls for a specific moment that represents your college preparedness. And unlike the first prompt, you need not focus this one on an academic or intellectual experience (although you certainly could!). Texas A&M’s goal is to assess that you have the holistic qualities that make for a positive contributor to the campus community, including being a team player, valuing ideological diversity, and taking on leadership roles. Once again, anecdotes and storytelling are your friend here. Remember, show, don’t tell!
2026-2027 Texas A&M Short Response Questions
The following four short response questions are given an upper character limit of 600:
1. In a few words, what are some of your life goals and objectives?
Get visionary and outline a few hook-related professional objectives and personal goals that show you’re a student with ambition. Don’t be afraid to shoot high!
2. In a few words, why have you chosen your academic major(s)?
What excites you about your intended major? How does it build on work you’ve already done (A.K.A., while pursuing your singular hook)? Without naming any specific courses or professors, what Texas A&M resources and opportunities, such as programs, events, organizations, and conferences related to your major, will you participate in once on campus? Write about these!
3. We know you have a lot of options, so why did you choose to apply to Texas A&M, in a few words?
While the last short-response question probed academic specifics, this one seeks the non-academic specifics that draw you to campus, especially the enduring institutional specifics that make Texas A&M one of a kind. What traditions, festivals, celebrations, student groups, and events will you participate in during your free time? In the brief space you have, paint a picture of a day on campus in which you go from one of these specific activities to the next.
4. Briefly describe any educational plans you have beyond earning your bachelor’s degree.
Once again, ambition is your friend here. What graduate degree related to your intended major could you see yourself pursuing? Whatever you do, don’t say that the buck stops with your bachelor’s. Texas A&M wants to admit high-achieving students!
