2026-2027 Ohio State Morrill Scholarship Essay Prompt

The Ohio State University has released its supplemental essay prompts for the Class of 2031. The only students who must submit supplemental essays during this admissions cycle are those applying to the Morrill Scholarship Program. This merit-based scholarship for U.S. citizens requires a supplemental essay of 350  to 500 words, although as readers of Ivy Coach’s admissions blog know, any written material submitted in your college applications should go right up to the word count allotted. How can you prepare to put your best foot forward with your response to this essay to optimize your odds of receiving the Morrill Scholarship? Let’s review.

The following essay response is required of all OSU applicants also applying to the Morrill Scholarship program.

To be considered for the Morrill Scholarship Program, create a persuasive response to the following question in 350 – 500 words.

The Morrill Scholarship Program encourages students to lead with character while making a positive impact on their communities. In what ways have your life experiences and/or endeavors prepared you to be an active Morrill Scholar who will champion scholarship, leadership, and civic engagement while investing in Ohio State’s culture of service reflective of its land grant mission? Please answer fully, and when possible, provide specific examples.

This multifaceted prompt should ideally be answered with a two-part response. The first half should highlight a specific experience or set of experiences that exemplify the values of Morrill Scholars, preferably one that highlights the pursuit of your singular hook. Your singular hook is the specific topic, discipline, cause, or passion that forms the backbone of your college application and was a primary use of your extracurricular time during high school. For some students, this hook is as simple as the origin story for their intended major. For others, it represents the altruistic or intellectual pursuit that has woven its way into every aspect of their academic, professional, or personal ambitions. Either way, this prompt is essentially asking you to share an anecdote from the pursuit of your hook that exemplifies the values of scholarship, leadership, and civic engagement that this program represents.

But the anecdote you share here can go in many different directions. If you’re an underrepresented minority student, you might consider writing about how your experience of difference has shaped your academic and intellectual goals, and thus invoke the Roberts Loophole. This little-known exception to the 2023 SCOTUS ruling outlawing Affirmative Action allows for race to be weighed insofar as it is described in written material submitted to colleges. In other words, if you are an underrepresented minority student (e.g., a Black or Latino student), you could talk about race in this essay, specifically through the prism of a pursuit related to your hook, such as a time you experienced discrimination but persevered to accomplish a great thing.

But you also might just simply decide to write about an experience that meaningfully shaped you outside of the classroom. There’s no need to reinvent the wheel here. A small moment of connection with someone in your local community that you experienced while pursuing your hook is enough to convey the holistic aspects of your character that will tug at the heartstrings of your application reader.

But that’s just the first half of this response. In your remaining 250 words or so, your goal is to inject each and every sentence with Morrill Scholarship and Ohio State specifics that apply to this program and school alone. This means you’ll have to thoroughly research the specific resources and opportunities that this scholarship would equip you with as you pursue your singular hook on campus. How will you leverage the events, advising structures, funding opportunities, and student groups associated with the Morrill Scholarship to forward the intellectual goals laid out in the first half of your essay? In your response, avoid mention of specific courses or faculty members, as these details are subject to change from year to year. Instead, strive to capture the enduring specifics of the program, the things that have and will continue to represent the essence of being a Morrill Scholar and an Ohio State student immersed in a culture of service.
