2026-2027 UMass Amherst Required Essay Prompts

The University of Massachusetts has released its supplemental essay prompts for the Class of 2031. Students applying this year must respond to two required essay prompts, each with an upper word limit of 100. As is the case with supplemental essays submitted to any college, it behooves every applicant to get as close to that upper limit as possible, as anything less could be interpreted as a lack of enthusiasm on your part. So, what questions are asked of students applying to UMass Amherst this year, and what goes into a strategic response?

The following essay prompts are required of all UMass Amherst applicants:

1. Please tell us why you want to attend UMass Amherst? (100 words)

This is a straightforward Why College prompt if we’ve ever seen one. Since you don’t have very much real estate to craft a compelling response (100 words is hardly anything by college supplemental essay standards), your goal is to inject a UMass Amherst-specific element into nearly every sentence. But not just any specific. The names of courses or individual faculty members, though details that can be found in many essays submitted to this university, are not examples of strategic “Why UMass” specifics. Think about it: each semester, the courses offered are subject to change, as are the professors teaching them. Why devote any space to details that won’t be applicable once you’re on campus?

Instead, your response should present a day in your life on campus in which you participate in everything the campus has to offer outside of the classroom, particularly the enduring institutional specifics that capture the essence of the UMass Amherst experience. These include the traditions, events, campus hotspots, resources, and opportunities that you could feasibly participate in. Academic details are covered in the next prompt, so leave specifics related to your intended major out here. Strive to paint an optimistic picture of your involvement in these various things to demonstrate to your application reader the sheer amount of research you’ve done into UMass Amherst. If you write a sentence that contains a detail that could apply to any other school, such as “small class sizes,” a “culture of interdisciplinary curiosity,” or “world-class faculty and resources,” delete it and try again!

2. Please tell us why you chose the Major(s) you did. (100 words)

Here’s where you can bring in all of those academic details you left out of your first response, but once again, professors or course titles won’t cut it! Instead, load up this Why Major prompt with the UMass-specific resources and opportunities that will allow you to take your pursuit of your intended major to the next level. What research conferences, fellowships, and job opportunities will you apply for? What about niche labs and internships? How will your department nurture you with unique advising structures, and what student organizations will you attend to shore up your understanding of the content covered in class? Where will your friends find you on a Thursday afternoon after you’ve wrapped up your classes for the day (hint: doing the kinds of things that you’d only be able to do at UMass!). Once again, instead of outright stating your intent to participate in these, show your reader what a day in your life on campus would look like, specifically one in which you’re immersed in your intended major.
