Tulane University has dropped its supplemental essay prompt for the 2026-2027 admission cycle. That’s right. It’s nowhere to be found. Whereas previous cycles’ applicants were directed to respond to a standard Why Tulane prompt that probed demonstrated interest, this year’s prospective Tulanians have no such opportunity to express that they’ve done their research into Tulane.

Will such a move inevitably result in a surge in applications as some students, lazy students at that, seize the opportunity to apply to Tulane using just their Common Application Personal Statement as all the written material they need to earn admission? Yes, no question. In fact, that’s without a doubt the only reason they’ve done away with the Tulane Supplement: to drive up applications and drive down the acceptance rate. It’s all a numbers game, but one that Tulane is bound to lose in the long run.

What’s Missing in the 2026-2027 Tulane University Application?

At first glance, removing a single essay requirement may seem insignificant. Why should applicants be concerned? The underlying motive for eliminating the Tulane supplement is to entice a larger pool of candidates, drawn by a shorter, simpler application. Yet, this strategy diminishes the overall caliber of submissions. The “Why College?” essay fulfills an essential role: it lets students showcase their understanding, or lack thereof, of the university’s unique features, including the ineffable qualities that make Tulane Tulane.

Without the optional essay, Tulane might experience a surge in applications, but this comes at the cost of missing genuine insight into the true potential of its prospective students. Tulane’s first years next year could very well be highly qualified academically, but completely devoid of that glimmer of interest that would prompt them to take advantage of the many resources, opportunities, and extracurriculars that enrich student life. However, given that Tulane was one of the few elite colleges to actually see a significant increase in its acceptance rate last year, which is an indicator of a crisis-inducing lack of interest in Tulane on the part of high school seniors worldwide, it’s no surprise the admissions office is using some pretty desperate measures to induce students to apply. But they’ll surely regret it in the long run once they’re left with a campus full of students who don’t have any interest in taking part in anything that campus has to offer.
