New York University has released its supplemental essay prompt for the 2026-2027 admissions cycle. In addition to The Common Application’s Personal Statement, applicants to NYU are asked to respond to one optional 250-word supplemental essay, and it’s the same as last year’s question about embodying the qualities of a bridge-builder (with a few words tweaked here and there).

Of course, while the NYU essay is optional, students who don’t write optional essays put themselves at a significant disadvantage, irrespective of what NYU’s admissions officers may say to the contrary.

2026-2027 New York University Essay Question

In 250 words or less, applicants to NYU’s Class of 2031 are asked to respond to the following prompt:

We are looking for students who want to be bridge builders—students who can connect people, groups, and ideas to span divides, foster understanding, and promote collaboration within a dynamic, interconnected, and vibrant global academic community. We are eager for you to tell us how your experiences have helped you understand what qualities and efforts are needed to bridge divides so that people can better learn and work together.

Please consider one or more of the following questions in your essay:

• Tell us about a time you encountered a perspective different from your own. What did you learn—about yourself, the other person, or the world?
• Tell us about an experience you’ve had working with others who have different perspectives. What role did you play in helping people to work together, and what did you learn from your efforts?
• Tell us about someone you’ve observed who does a particularly good job helping people think or work together. How does this person set the stage for common exploration or work? How do they react when challenges arise? What qualities do you admire in this person?

At such a divisive time on college campuses amid a perfect storm of rising campus antisemitism and heightened federal scrutiny of public funding of colleges, NYU’s admissions committee is laudably seeking to admit students who are willing to listen to the other side in a disagreement. They want to offer admission to students who will learn from one another and aren’t so utterly convinced that what they think to be true is true. But they also want to admit students who are observant, who understand what other people bring to the table and recognize that they might be able to learn a thing or two from them.

This essay prompt is thus an opportunity for students to showcase, by showing through example rather than telling, their ability to engage in critical self-reflection. They want students who recognize we’re all more alike than we are different since this fact is foundational to a liberal arts education, especially in a place as diverse and lively as New York City.
