Lafayette College Supplemental Essay Prompts: 2026-2027
2026-2027 Lafayette College Optional Essay Prompt
Lafayette College has released its 2026-2027 admissions essay for applicants to the Class of 2031. Other than The Common Application Personal Statement, there is just one optional supplemental essay for applicants this year. But does optional truly mean optional? Could you really get away with leaving this box blank on your Lafayette application? Of course not!
Most likely, Lafayette admissions officers made this prompt optional to test prospective students: do you have the enthusiasm to see the entire application process through, or are you simply slapping together your submission and calling it a day? They want to distinguish lazy applicants from those who mean business. And yes, they’ll even penalize you for failing to submit an essay that goes up to the upper word limit, which is 200!
The moral of the story: submit this optional supplemental essay. But now that you (hopefully!) have the resolve to do so, how should you tackle it? What goes into a competitive response? We’ll unpack how to strategically approach it below.
Why Lafayette College? Students identify Lafayette College as an excellent fit for countless reasons. In your response, be deliberate and specific about your motivation for applying to Lafayette. (20-200 words)
This prompt exemplifies the classic “Why College” essay. With a tight 200-word limit, nearly every sentence should showcase something distinctive to Lafayette College. Your goal is to weave enduring, institution-specific details that define Lafayette into each sentence. However, not all details are valuable. Some could even weaken your application if you include them. For instance, resist the urge to simply list courses or faculty, as these are not truly strategic “Why Lafayette” elements. Courses and professors change regularly, so avoid details that may not apply when you begin your studies. Also, steer clear of mentioning qualities that could describe any college, like small classes, favorable student-faculty ratios, a vibrant and diverse student body, or top-notch libraries and facilities. Instead, illustrate what makes these facilities unique: describe where students gather to study, what the campus café offers, the kinds of research happening in the labs, or particular features of the residential system that enhance student well-being.
And yes, in case it wasn’t already clear, this means you should hop online and do your research! Dig into the Lafayette website. Go on social media and see what student organizations are doing. Check out research presentations from your intended major’s department on YouTube.
And once you’ve done sufficient research and have a clear idea of the Lafayette specifics you intend to cite, avoid the cardinal rule of college essays: telling rather than showing. Your goal is to demonstrate how you intend to contribute to campus life. Paint a clear picture of your everyday experiences at Lafayette, emphasizing your involvement in the community inside and outside the classroom. Spotlight enduring elements that define life at Lafayette, including unique traditions, hallmark events, favorite social spaces, valuable student resources, and distinctive extracurriculars.
Since Lafayette only poses this one supplemental prompt, dedicate part of your essay to discussing academic resources and opportunities that attract you to the college and will support the pursuit of your chosen field. Given the college’s small student population and relatively low acceptance rate, admissions officers seek applicants with clear plans for engagement once on campus. There’s simply no room to admit a student who won’t get involved! Thus, this essay is your chance to present that plan and to demonstrate why Lafayette, more than any other school, can fuel your ambitions and help you develop your unique interests. A.K.A., what we at Ivy Coach would call your singular hook.
