2026-2027 Fordham University Required Essay Prompt

Fordham University has released its supplemental essay prompts for the Class of 2031. Applicants may respond to one of three prompts in 300 words or fewer. However, optional never truly means optional when it comes to supplemental essays. Any student who sincerely wishes to earn admission to Fordham should certainly submit this optional essay to demonstrate their interest in attending, and the response should come as close as possible to the 300-word limit for this same reason.

But now that you’ve resolved to submit a supplemental essay, which prompt should you choose and what should you write about?

Applicants to Fordham are given the opportunity to respond to one of the following three prompts in 300 words or less:

1. Our motto is “New York is my campus, Fordham is my school.” New York City is a diverse and global city that provides Fordham students with a special kind of educational experience, full of both challenge and opportunity. What has prepared you to embrace the unique opportunity of living and learning in New York City?

The two-part response first asks you to reflect on personal experiences that will shape the activities you pursue once you’ve gained admission to Fordham. We at Ivy Coach refer to your primary interests and activities throughout your high school career as your singular hook. Think of it as the origin story underlying your choice of intended major. What hook-related activities will serve as a blueprint for your involvement in the New York City community? Share an anecdote from that illustrates your willingness to engage with diverse perspectives and/or your capacity to take advantage of a unique educational opportunity, as told through your pursuit of that one particular thing that you devoted time to in high school.

For the second half of your response, voice the Fordham-specific details that draw you to the university, as told through the prism of how you’ll get involved in greater New York City. In other words, your response should highlight the Fordham activities, organizations, events, and initiatives that will take you off of campus and into the surrounding community, particularly through civic engagement. While you no doubt are excited to experience a Broadway play or visit the Statue of Liberty, most students will mention such details. Dare to be different. Write about the Fordham theater group that puts on an annual play for the Bronx community or the student group that serves as docents for a local history museum. Show that you want to experience a side of Fordham’s intersection with New York City that few students know about!

2. At Fordham, we have a tradition of having our graduating seniors send a message to their younger selves. What will the future “you” tell the “you” of today about what you accomplished as a Fordham student?

This prompt is a straightforward Why College prompt in disguise. Through the framing device of a letter your future Fordham-alumni self would write to your current self, highlight how you’ve made the most out of your four years at Fordham by taking advantage of all the resources and opportunities at your disposal on campus. And, as with the previous prompt, just any details won’t suffice. Strive to orient this imagined docket of activities around your singular hook. What hook-related research fellowships, student organizations, conferences, events, traditions, and extracurricular activities did you use your time at Fordham to pursue? Avoid listing individual classes you took or professors you were taught by, as these details are subject to change from semester to semester.

Instead, focus on the enduring facets of the Fordham experience that remain the same over the years, including the long-standing groups, the traditions that mark milestones in student life, and the programs that endure across semesters. Yes, this means you must hop on Fordham’s website and thoroughly research the kinds of hook-related things you could feasibly do on campus! As you write your response, narrate your future self’s involvement in these activities in the past tense, like you already did everything and have the perspective to share how these experiences shaped you.

3. At Fordham, we expect students to care for and engage with their communities and be active citizens for positive change. Please share an experience you had that caused you to develop a new perspective, change your point of view, and/or empower you to take an action or be courageous. Your response should include examples of your personal growth (e.g., what did you learn, did your point of view change, did you develop new skills or strengths?).

Whereas the first two prompts, in one form or another, ask you to think ahead to your potential time at Fordham, this prompt asks you to look back on your high school career with a new perspective. In your response, highlight a hook-related anecdote that demonstrates your willingness to grow, have your mind change, take on a challenge, or otherwise make your local community a better place. And yes, an anecdotal experience means you should strive to tell a compelling story that uses all the conventions of narrative, including dialogue, setting, characterization, etc. Perhaps you noticed a traffic problem in your neighborhood, surveyed residents about a solution, and this experience ignited your passion for public policy. Or maybe you assisted a local professor with research and took the initiative to do more than was asked of you. Either way, choose something with an academic or intellectual slant that ties into your intended major.

No matter the anecdote, your goal is to demonstrate your critical thinking and growth. Don’t simply state the play-by-play of the experience you choose. Take some time to illustrate how this experience changed you and will be carried with you as you continue to pursue your singular hook! Admissions officers love to see that students can play well with others, challenge their own assumptions, and recognize the value of a diversity of opinions, so don’t be afraid to show how your mind was changed or your values challenged by this experience.
