Colorado College Supplemental Essay Prompts: 2026-2027
2026-2027 Colorado College Required Essay Prompt
Colorado College has released its supplemental essay prompts for the Class of 2031. Students applying to Colorado this year are directed to respond to an optional essay prompt in 300 words or less. Prefacing the prompt is the following:
The supplemental essay is optional for students applying to Colorado College. If you choose not to submit an essay, you will not be penalized. Review guidance to applicants on our website and consider whether the prompt gives you another way to tell your story.
But does optional really mean optional? Take it from Ivy Coach: absolutely not! Colorado College will certainly penalize you if you do not submit this “optional” essay, even though they claim otherwise! But wait, does this mean admissions officers at this elite liberal arts college are lying to their applicants? You betcha!
And just as they will penalize you with decreased odds of admission if you don’t submit an essay, they will also penalize any student who doesn’t use the full word count allotted to them (300 words). Moreover, the school has linked to its additional guidance to applicants for a reason. Before you even begin planning your response to the following prompt, thoroughly read the webpage linked above and take its guidance to heart.
One of the benefits of Colorado College’s Block Plan is the opportunity to immerse yourself fully in a single subject for 3.5 weeks. We see this as the luxury of focus — the joy and value of directing your full attention to one thing. Tell us about a time when you experienced this kind of deep focus in an academic or extracurricular setting. What were you doing and how did it turn out?
This question essentially gives you carte blanche to go all out on describing that one passion that makes you tick. We at Ivy Coach have a term for this passion: the singular hook. Think of it as the specific discipline, topic, pursuit, or cause that has formed the intellectual foundation of your high school years and provides the context needed to understand why you want to major in your intended field of study. Your singular hook can be as simple as mathematics or history, or as personal and complex as the niche topic you’ve addressed in your community through a very specific set of activities outside of the classroom. Either way, Colorado College is giving you the opportunity to paint a picture of your passion and involvement with this hook.
In your response, you shouldn’t just simply state that you explored art history while interning at a museum, conducted field research during a visit to a nature reserve, puzzled through a math problem at the Olympiad, or volunteered with a political campaign and met members of your neighborhood while canvassing (although all are great starting points!). You should relate these experiences through the lens of perspective: what did they teach you, what assumptions did you have going into them that were challenged and ultimately changed, why did this feel meaningful, and were you left with the feeling of having contributed to something meaningful and bigger than yourself?
In your response, be careful not to overlap with anything you’ve already written in your Personal Statement, and avoid any and all bragging and boasting about the subject you choose. While you certainly should choose something that will impress your application reader, don’t come across as full of yourself. Avoid mention of financial figures, numerical accomplishments, or anything that’s too self-aggrandizing. Let your actions speak for themselves.
