The Georgia Institute of Technology has released its supplemental essay prompt for students applying to join the Class of 2030. As a STEM-leaning research university, Georgia Tech places a high premium on applicants who can demonstrate a strong affinity for their chosen field and a passion for pursuing their discipline on campus and beyond. So, it’s no surprise that students applying during the 2025-2026 academic year must respond to a single prompt probing their reasoning behind choosing their given major and the game plan they have for engaging with their studies once on campus.

2025-2026 Georgia Tech Essay Topic and Question

1. Why do you want to study your chosen major and why do you want to study your major at Georgia Tech? (300 words)

This is your standard hybrid “Why Major?” and “Why College” essay in which you should articulate both your passion for your singular hook and your deep understanding of the enduring institutional specifics that make Georgia Tech Georgia Tech. Your chosen major should, naturally, be a reflection of the powerful singular hook you’ve (hopefully) honed throughout the college admissions process to convey to Georgia Tech that you’re an expert in your chosen field and intend to dedicate your time and energy to pursuing one specific topic, cause, discipline, or passion in particular. 

Your singular hook is the highly specific and undeniably “you” way that you’ve taken it upon yourself to make a change in the world. For GT applicants, your singular hook must relate to a STEM discipline. It should ideally be something that you can continue to pursue by taking advantage of the resources and opportunities you would have at your disposal at GT. Perhaps you’d like to contribute to ongoing research that builds upon the work you conducted at your local community college, exploring the mathematics behind climate change. Maybe you’re going to join the Environmental Science department to carry on the legacy of the hydroponics setup you helped build at your high school. Or it could be as simple as developing your love of engineering by continuing to tinker with new materials in the Engineering department. You get the idea? However, individual professors or courses aren’t going to cut it, as these details shift from semester to semester.

For the second half of this two-part question, you should shift your focus to the broader landscape of events, traditions, history, activities, and resources available to you at Georgia Tech that would facilitate your academic exploration and allow you to continue to pursue your singular hook. Please take note that we don’t simply mean the sorts of Georgia Tech specifics you could glean from a glance at their admissions brochure, a skimming of their website, or from notes from a campus tour. No, we instead encourage you to take a deep dive into Georgia Tech’s digital footprint — from their department opportunities to their social media presence and the testimony of current students — to gather the details that would teach Georgia Tech admissions officers a thing or two about their own school.

These two parts of your response should combine into what amounts to a love letter to Georgia Tech that, instead of bragging and boasting about your accomplishments, instills faith in Georgia Tech admissions officers that you’ll hit the ground running once admitted and immediately begin to make the most out of your admission.
