The time has come for us to put on our college admissions detective hats. The University of Michigan is one of the world’s foremost research universities, with thousands of students vying for the chance to join its campus each year. And yet, we don’t know their Early Action acceptance rate. We know that applicants typically receive a significant admissions boost when applying in any given college’s Early round, but we don’t know how much of a boost those applying to the University of Michigan get. And why? Because the University of Michigan has historically chosen not to release this data. University of Michigan Hasn’t Published Any Early Action Acceptance Rate Data

So, what do we know about Early Action admits to UMichigan? Unfortunately, not much. Usually, such information would be publicly available on UMichigan’s Common Data Set, a federally mandated archive of all things admissions. But UMichigan hasn’t given us this level of transparency. We do, however, know that the University of Michigan Class of 2028 overall acceptance rate clocked in at 15.64%, setting a new record for selectivity. 

UMichigan Early Action Applicants Are at An Advantage

It’s time we let our readers in on a little secret (that won’t come as much of a surprise for regular readers of Ivy Coach’s college admissions blog!) — admissions officers at elite colleges are prone to not telling it like it is. That’s right, they can’t always be trusted to speak the truth. They say they don’t care about your family’s financial status and then ask outright if you require financial aid on the application! They claim not to weigh Demonstrated Interest, yet give an undeniable advantage to applicants who show they are enthusiastic about attending — case in point: Early Action candidates.

According to the University of Michigan’s Undergraduate Admissions Office, “The Office of Undergraduate Admissions promises no special privileges to Early Action candidates, such as giving your application materials a higher priority or a more lenient review. Choosing to apply through Early Action does not make it easier or harder to gain admission to U-M—it is merely a way to get your decision sooner.” Is anyone else’s lie detector going off right now?

It’s not that an Early Action applicant with terrible grades and no singular hook will magically earn admission just because they applied in the Early round. Instead, UMichigan admissions officers prize EA candidates because they have demonstrated their interest and shown their enthusiasm for attending. If it were your job to curate an incoming class, wouldn’t you prefer to draw from the pool of applicants who were so enthusiastic about attending that they applied Early?

While we may not have specific statistics about UMichigan’s Early Action round, one thing is certain: Early Action candidates are admitted at a higher rate than the college’s overall acceptance rate. So, if you’re an Early Action applicant, take heart in this fact and keep your hopes high.
