There’s a new crop of Wolverines soon to join the green plains of the University of Michigan, and we’re not talking about the latest young adult TV craze. The University of Michigan has recently admitted its Class of 2030, and Ivy Coach is ready to unpack the admissions statistics. The only problem? Michigan leadership has opted to withhold the data! Not that this move is shocking. Many schools have turned away from admissions transparency in recent years as the media has begun to scrutinize elite schools more and more. But there’s still plenty to unpack:

Michigan Class of 2030 in Historical Perspective

The data for the Class of 2029 is still forthcoming, but the acceptance rate will almost certainly be revealed in the school’s next Common Data Set. Until then, all we know is that applications to this renowned public university have been increasing at an astounding rate over the last eleven years.

In the last five years, the acceptance rate at Michigan has dropped from a high of 20.15% for the Class of 2025 to a record low of 15.64% for the Class of 2028, whilst bouncing back slightly to 16.42% for the Class of 2029. Whether this trend of diminishing acceptance rates will hold for the Class of 2029 remains to be seen, but it wouldn’t be particularly surprising if the record for total applications received, currently held by the Class of 2029’s titanic 109,112 hopefuls, is broken this year, as it has every increased single year on record since the Class of 2019 was admitted.

What We Do Know About the University of Michigan Class of 2030

We do not yet know a stitch of demographic data on this new round of Wolverines. This time last year, the University of Michigan released a comprehensive breakdown of the cohort’s socioeconomic and geographic origins, but this year, no such report can be found.

In any event, underrepresented groups have not shied away from this esteemed public research university despite the fallout of the 2023 SCOTUS case overturning Affirmative Action, as the student profile for the Class of 2029 plainly indicates. These groups of students, including Black and Latino college applicants, belong on college campuses. That’s why we at Ivy Coach encourage our students who fall into these categories to always take advantage of the Roberts Loophole to describe experiences of race-based adversity in the essay portion of their applications.
