About Clemson University

Clemson is a public university located in South Carolina in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains on a 1,400-acre campus bordering Lake Hartwell. It’s got Southern charm and beautiful views to boot. With around 24,060 undergraduates, Clemson is a great choice for students who want a bigger school feel.

Clemson consists of nine different colleges offering a vast array of programs. Stand-outs are the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences; the College of Architecture, Art and Construction; the College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences; the Harvey S. Peeler Jr. College of Veterinary Medicine; and the College of Education.

For the Clemson University Class of 2028, only 36% of applicants gained admission. This makes Clemson a moderately competitive school. It also means that getting in will require some strategic planning (and the help of Ivy Coach’s college admissions experts certainly wouldn’t hurt!).

There is no copy-and-paste format for a successful application to Clemson, or to any university, for that matter. It won’t come as a surprise to you that strong grades, high test scores, and notable extracurricular achievements form the trifecta of a good college application. But admissions officers look at each student in his or her own context. Let’s look at what some of the common denominators among admits to Clemson are. 

What Kind of GPA Is Necessary To Get Into Clemson University?

The following is the GPA breakdown of the members of CU’s Class of 2028, as reported in CU’s 2024-25 Common Data Set:

So, 86% of admits to Clemson’s Class of 2028 had perfect high school GPAs. That’s a lot of the class! But before you fret: We suspect Clemson of using weighted GPA data here. That’s the only way they could have reported figures demonstrating nearly all admits had perfect grades in high school, an unlikely feat, given Clemson’s academic reputation compared to other elite schools.

What Kind of SAT or ACT Scores Are Needed To Get Into Clemson?

What Classes Do Students Need to Take to Get Into Clemson University?

Clemson recommends four years of English, three years of math, three years of science, two years of language, and three years of social science. 

Of course, we would never recommend a Clemson applicant complete only three years of history, three years of science, and three years of foreign language.

Admissions officers at Clemson want to see students excelling in each core subject (English, history, math, science, and foreign language) all four years of high school. In fact, they expect to see five years for foreign language since most students begin their first level of foreign language in eighth grade.

What Kinds of Extracurriculars Does Clemson Like To See?

We’re going to clear up a common misunderstanding: highly selective colleges are not looking for well-rounded students. They’re looking for a well-rounded student body comprised of students who are each singularly talented. 

In terms of extracurriculars, that means Clemson is looking for depth over breadth. If you’re a member of the debate team, the robotic team, the field hockey team, and the drama department…well, then, you’re merely a member of those groups. You don’t stand out in any of these pursuits. Clemson would much rather accept a nationally ranked debate champ than a kid who spent an hour or two on debate a week because he spent the rest forgetting Shakespeare lines and fumbling the ball in football practice. 

Clemson Application Requirements

Clemson accepts both The Common Application and The Coalition Application. Though Clemson does not require letters of recommendation, we strongly advise applicants to submit at least two letters of recommendation. 

Who Should Students Ask For Letters of Recommendation For Clemson? 

Clemson applicants should ask two teachers, ideally two junior year teachers in core subjects. Obviously, the applicant should have a good relationship with the teacher or at least have performed well in their class. In addition, at least one of the recommenders’ subject area should be related to the student’s hook: if a student’s singular hook is studying fruit fly DNA, it wouldn’t make sense if their recommenders were their History and English teachers. 

Does Clemson Require An Interview? 

Clemson does not require an interview and, in fact, they don’t even offer one! 

What Are Clemson University’s Application Deadlines? 

Early Decision I applications are due on Nov. 1. Regular Decision applications are due Jan. 1.
