Ever dreamed of being escorted to class by the blowing of a historic steam whistle? Around 1896, Georgia Tech acquired a steam whistle modeled after the industrial whistles common during the time. The Whistle called the students to shop classes, and it still does so today (okay, it’s now a modern computerized atomic clock that releases steam, but same difference).

With all this fanfare comes exclusivity. For the Class of 2029, Georgia Tech’s admissions rate for Georgia residents was 30%. That sounds like a pretty high number, right? Well, in reality, that means 7 in 10 students applying are turned away. And for non-residents, that admissions rate sinks to just 9%, which means fewer than 1 out of every 10 students is admitted. 

That means a crucial part of earning acceptance to Georgia Tech will include a strong GPA, as well as top test scores, stellar extracurriculars, and a wonderful, weird, unique application hook. As for that GPA number, let’s take a closer look at just how high hopeful future Yellow Jackets should bee (get it, bee?) aiming.

Georgia Institute of Technology Admission Rate

Let’s dive into the Georgia Tech admissions rate and what it means with regard to GPA minimums for applicants aspiring to join the Class of 2030. Georgia Tech’s overall acceptance rate for the Class of 2029 was down to 12.7%. They saw a record number of 66,895 applicants, and admitted only 8,520. Whew!

Of these applicants, 40,022 were men and just 19,765 were women. So, any female students applying will have a slight advantage over their male counterparts. The number of male students admitted is only about 1,000 more than female students, meaning the acceptance odds do get higher for women applying to Georgia Tech.

Key Georgia Tech Admissions Considerations

Two key factors in a student’s application to Georgia Tech are rigor of secondary school record and academic GPA, with the university describing those as “Very Important” in their review process. Admissions officers do not consider class rank, and standardized test scores fall low in their consideration list as well. This means GPA is going to be weighted most heavily, and students looking to gain acceptance to this increasingly exclusive school need to prepare accordingly. 

The GPAs of Georgia Tech Students

For the Georgia Tech Class of 2028, according to the 2024-2025 Common Data Set, just 1.07% of students who enrolled had a GPA lower than 3.49. 

Based on the chart below, to be on the safer side when applying, students should be aiming for at the very bare minimum a 3.5 GPA. But even that, of course, might not cut it!

Only 6.39% of GT students in the Class of 2028 had a GPA below 4.0 when they applied and were admitted. The Class Rank of Georgia Tech Students

Although not considered in the admissions process, Georgia Tech provides data on those applicants who do submit class rank and enroll in the school (that’s 41.8% of their students in the Class of 2028). Almost all of the students who submitted their rank and joined the GT Class of 2028 (literally 99 out of every 100) were in the top half of their graduating class.
