Georgia Tech’s Class of 2029 in Historical Perspective

Take a second to look at the above chart. Notice a trend line? We sure hope you do. Very few colleges have taken such a steep climb into selectivity over the last ten years than this STEM-specialized private research university in Atlanta. If you were to isolate the data for the admission of the Class of 2019, you wouldn’t be remiss in characterizing Georgia Tech as a moderately selective school far from the likes of the nation’s top elite colleges. 

However, the following few years proved incredibly successful for Georgia Tech’s admissions office. The Class of 2019’s then-record applicant pool of 27,277 would go on to be eclipsed each and every year, up to the present moment when an astounding 67,985 students applied for admission to the Georgia Tech Class of 2030. Paralleling this meteoric rise in application numbers has been a decrease in acceptance that most recently clocked in at 12.82%, which did not beat last year’s record of 12.74%, but came pretty close!

While no one can say for sure why Georgia Tech has managed to attract so many students these last few years, it could be that with the rising value of a degree in the STEM fields, more and more students have opted to attend an “Institute of Technology” that they perceive is easier to get into than the likes of MIT or Caltech, especially one in the bustling urban hub that is Atlanta. One thing is for sure: GT admissions officers are admitting a larger class now than they did ten years ago (compare 8,715 to 7,868), and GT is thus joining the ranks of the most selective schools in the country despite admitting more students.

According to a GT press release, “Admitted students hail from 97 nations, all 50 states (plus Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C.), and 3,083 high schools.”  Moreover, the acceptance rates for domestic Georgia and non-Georgia applicants were 28% and 9%, respectively.
