Getting into Yale University is about as difficult as storming Fort Knox. And great grades won’t cut it alone. Before we launch into the GPA conversation, let’s review the Yale acceptance rate. Last year, only 4.75% of those who applied earned admission, and the year before that, an astounding 3.87% of those who applied to the Class of 2028 earned admission. For the Class of 2027, this figure stood at 4.50%.

Further Context on GPAs of Yale Students

In what should come as a surprise to very few, Yale has incredibly high academic standards to which it holds its applicants. Those who stand a chance of earning admission have graduated from their high schools in the top tenth percentile of their graduating class, full stop. There is very little wiggle room in this regard. And while we don’t have explicit GPA data to go off of, the likelihood is that very few students at Yale had below a 3.5 in high school.

With that being said, great grades alone won’t cut it in Yale’s “holistic and contextual” review process. Students must also bring a compelling singular hook to the table to inspire admission officers at Yale to root for their case.

Can I Get into Yale University with a Low GPA?

There’s hardly any chance any given student will earn admission to Yale with a low GPA — or even a GPA below 3.5! Those that do almost exclusively possess some special status that earned them extra consideration in the admissions process: recruited athletes, development cases, and legacies.
