We’ve assembled this survey of transfer acceptance rates over the last three admissions cycles from Columbia’s online archive of Common Data Sets, the public’s source for all things admissions data. Some schools publish Common Data Sets that stretch back for decades, while others keep their cards close to the vest. Columbia is in this latter camp. However, it doesn’t take decades of data to see a clear trend: transfer applicants face better odds than first-year applicants to Columbia!

All three years of data listed above highlight this fact, with the most recent 2024-2025 cohort seeing transfer applicants get into Columbia at over twice the rate of their first-year counterparts (compare the 8.97% acceptance rate for 4,180 transfers applying that year to the 4.29% acceptance rate for first-years that year). The same is true of the 3,254 students applying during the 2023-2024 admission cycle (in which 10.11% of transfers earned admission versus 3.86% of first-year applicants), and the 3,008 students who applied during the 2022-2023 cycle (in which 11.34% of transfers earned admission versus 3.99% of first-year applicants).

Why Columbia Respects Transfer Applicants

Despite the prevailing belief that transfer applicants are an afterthought at most elite schools, the proof is in the pudding: Columbia has a ton of respect for this unique class of applicants (as do most other elite schools). Not only do these unconventional students contribute to the complexity and character of the student body, but they are also major drivers of the school’s overall diversity.

Aside from contributing to diversity simply for being transfers, these students also typically come from underrepresented backgrounds that round out any student body. From low-income and first-generation students to those who transfer from community colleges or out of America’s armed services, transfer students are prized by admissions officers for being entirely unique. And just as admissions officers attempt to round out the gender or racial diversity in any given cohort, so it goes with transfer applicants.

Another factor contributing to the boost in transfer admissions is that transfer applicants are data ghosts who enroll without adversely affecting the academic statistics reported in the Common Data Set. And why would this matter? This data is a direct part of the equation that factors into third-party rankings and indicators of institutional prestige. Because only first-year data must be reported to The Common Data Sets, transfer applicants essentially get a free pass to be admitted without being held to the same standard.
