Founded in 1872 as the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College, Virginia Tech is a powerhouse in the heart of the New River Valley that counts among its alumni Clifton C. Garvin, former Chairman and CEO of Exxon; astronaut Roger K. Crouch; and a plethora of NFL and NBA players. Virginia Tech has around 31,000 undergraduate students, making it a large school. And, with an acceptance rate of 54.6%, it’s not exactly a highly selective institution.

Further Context on GPAs of Virginia Tech Students

Last year, the Virginia Tech Class of 2029 included a whopping 76% of first-year students coming in with a perfect high school GPA. 13% of that class had a GPA between 3.75 and 3.99. Another 7% of the class had a GPA between 3.5 and 3.74 

The year before that, things were a little bit less competitive in terms of GPAs. 59.26% of the Virginia Tech Class of 2028 had a perfect high school GPA. Another 20.96% had a GPA between 3.75 and 3.99. And 12.41% had a GPA between 3.5 and 3.74. 

Finally, when we look back three years, we see things were even less competitive on the report card front. Only 21.65% of the Virginia Tech Class of 2029 had a perfect high school GPA. 42.71% of incoming first-year students had a GPA between 3.75 and 3.99. 26.71% of the class had a GPA between 3.5 and 3.74. 

Can Students Get into Virginia Tech with a Low GPA?

The short answer: it’s possible, but it’s not likely. You’ve seen how the numbers have been trending. Though Virginia Tech does accept some students with lower GPAs, we’d wager that many of those students are exceptional cases (say, a student recruited to be a quarterback on the football team). 

But Virginia Tech has a holistic admissions review process. Students are not just report cards and test scores. If college admissions were a numbers game alone, admissions officers would be out of their jobs, and so would we. Instead, college admissions involves context. Admissions officers want to know not just your GPA but the rigor of your coursework and the competitiveness of your high school. Admissions officers weigh personal statements, extracurricular involvement, personal integrity, life experience, special talents, and more. At the end of the day, Virginia Tech is looking for movers and shakers, not just text takers. They want students who are going to grow into alumni who reflect well on their university and enhance its standing in the nation and across the globe. While these types of students are often top grade earners in high school, there are other ways to demonstrate excellence.
