Vanderbilt is a force to be reckoned with in elite college admissions. Each year, it gets progressively more challenging to earn admission. And yes, this difficulty includes students with near-perfect grades and test scores. However, it’s not only about having top grades and test scores when seeking admission to this gem of the American South.

What kind of GPA does a student need when applying to Vanderbilt? Though the GPA data for Vanderbilt’s Classes of 2029 and 2030 are not yet available, we can still take a look at the data from the three admissions cycles prior:

First, just how difficult is it to get into Vanderbilt? Of applicants to Vanderbilt’s Class of 2029, only 4.7% earned admission (a record low acceptance rate for the university). The year prior, for the Class of 2028, this number was 5.1%. For the Class of 2027, 6.2% of applicants set a record for the lowest acceptance rate recorded at the time. In other words, getting into Vanderbilt is only getting more difficult each year!

Further Context on GPAs of Vanderbilt Students

So, a little over a third of students who enrolled in Vanderbilt’s Class of 2028 boasted perfect GPAs, while 37.7% of students in Vanderbilt’s Class of 2027 did, and 40.2% of students in Vanderbilt’s Class of 2026 left high school with perfect academic track records. For all these admissions cycles, most of the remaining students in each class boasted GPAs in the 3.75-3.99 range.

But remember, increasingly in recent years, most students admitted to Vanderbilt choose to enroll. So, just imagine how many students who did not earn admission to this private research university also submitted perfect or near-perfect GPAs! Taking this into consideration, getting into Vanderbilt might seem even more daunting.

Without context — including the high school attended, the rigor of the student’s coursework, their extracurriculars, essays, letters of recommendation, and so much more — the answer we would give would be meaningless. 

Vanderbilt, like all of America’s highly selective universities, employs a holistic admissions process. This means that grades and test scores are just two components of the equation. The institution values a unique perspective and diverse experiences, and it’s not just about a student’s GPA.

Can I Get into Vanderbilt University with a Low GPA?

While it’s certainly possible to get into Vanderbilt with a low GPA, as the numbers bear out, it’s improbable. For the Class of 2028, only 3.8% of admitted students to Vanderbilt had GPAs below 3.5, and it’s worth noting that these students likely filled institutional needs such as being the children of donors or major recruited athletes (thus receiving a leg up in the admissions process).
