Tucked along the Genesee River in upstate New York, the University of Rochester has an acceptance rate that hovers around 40%. This means it’s not exactly what we at Ivy Coach would consider a highly selective university (though it is selective!). Still, the University of Rochester is nothing to sneeze at, especially if you’re looking for a more reasonably selective school for your child. 

Founded in 1850, Rochester stands out for its uniquely flexible curriculum. There’s only one required course at the university and no general education requirements. Students at Rochester laud the university for the encouragement to study their passion without compromising. With around 6,000 undergraduates, the University of Rochester is a mid-sized school, a good spot for students who want to be in a balanced environment.

The University of Rochester has only made the data from last year available online, but we can still glean a picture from what admissions looked like for the most recently admitted class.

Further Context on GPAs of University of Rochester Students 

OK, if you’re not a charts and figures person, let’s actually walk through what these numbers mean. Last year, 21.57% of students who matriculated at the University of Rochester did so with perfect high school GPAs. This is about a fifth of the Rochester Class of 2029. A third of the class had a GPA between 3.75 and 3.99. Add those two figures up, and you’ll see that over half of the Rochester Class of 2029 had impressive high school GPAs above the 3.75 mark. 

Still, there were some less stellar report cards that found their way into the mix. About a fifth of the class (24.38%) of incoming first-year students had a GPA between 3.5 and 3.74. 14.27% of the class had a GPA between 3.25 and 3.49. And 5.35% of the class had a GPA between 3.0 and 3.24.

College admissions is not just a numbers game. The University of Rochester tends to reject some applicants with great grades and test scores. Similarly, we’d wager that many of those low-GPA earners you’re seeing gained admission because of non-academic contributions they could make to The University of Rochester. Those numbers might represent the star quarterback or a 6’8” rower who will power a Rochester boat to victory. It’s for this very reason that we decline to answer parents who share their child’s GPA during complimentary consultations with Ivy Coach, as though this alone determines their child’s chances of getting into the University of Rochester. 

Can Students Get into the University of Rochester with a Low GPA?

The short answer: it’s possible but, as with every school, the higher a student’s GPA, the more attractive they become to an admissions committee. But there are other ways for students to demonstrate excellence beyond spotless report cards. And a student with a low GPA at a rigorous school is going to fare differently than a student with a low GPA from an easy course load. 

At the end of the day, the University of Rochester isn’t just looking for automatons who are going to sit in class, absorb every single fact, and regurgitate those facts perfectly on a test. If that’s what they were up to, the student body would be a little bit boring. Instead, the University of Rochester is looking for students who are going to contribute to their research output, serve as dynamic leaders on campus and beyond, and increase the university’s standing within the nation and reputation across the globe. Those types of students tend to have stellar academic records, but that’s not to say they unilaterally do.
