The Cathedral of Learning, a 42-story Gothic Revival tower on the University of Pittsburgh’s campus, is the tallest educational building in the Western Hemisphere and one of the tallest university buildings in the world. Pitt has approximately 20,400 undergraduates and an acceptance rate of 59.5%, meaning it’s not exactly a super competitive place to get into. But it’s still an impressively well-resourced university with a sizeable research output.

Further Context on GPAs of UPitt Students

Alright, now you’ve seen the numbers. What exactly do they mean? Last year, for the University of Pittsburgh Class of 2029, 61% of incoming first-year students had a perfect high school GPA. Another 20% had a GPA between 3.75 and 3.99. 12% had a GPA between 3.5 and 3.74. That leaves only 7% of the class with a GPA below the 3.5 mark. 

The year before, for the University of Pittsburgh Class of 2028, 67% of enrolled students had a 4.0. The next bracket (3.75 to 3.99) comprised 17% of the class. 10% were in the 3.5 to 3.74 bracket. This means that only 6% had a GPA below 3.5. 

Finally, if we look three years back, we’ll see that a sizeable 70% of the University of Pittsburgh Class of 2027 had a perfect GPA in high school. 17.5% had a GPA between 3.75 and 3.99, and 9% had a GPA between 3.5 and 3.74. So, only 4% of the University of Pittsburgh Class of 2027 had a GPA below that 3.5 mark. 

That’s much ado about numbers. College admissions, at the University of Pittsburgh and basically every other institution of higher learning under the sun, is way more than a numbers game. Can Students Get into the UPitt with a Low GPA?

So, you’re probably wondering: If I have a low GPA, and I want to get into the University of Pittsburgh, do I still have a chance of climbing to the highest tower of the Cathedral of Learning? The answer is yes and no. While it’s possible to get into the University of Pittsburgh with a low GPA, it’s not probable. You saw those numbers. And the few students who do get into the University of Pittsburgh with a low GPA are usually exceptional cases. We’d wager, for example, that some are recruited athletes.
