You might be feeling some panic set in after reviewing the data laid out above. The only year UMD has admitted students off of its waitlisted was for the Class of 2022 (the inaugural admission cycle for the waitlist program), and because of a gap in the data we don’t know the acceptance rate. All other years on record saw no students admitted through the waitlist. But this picture isn’t as bleak as it seems. For one thing, for most of these cycles, including the three most recent ones, no one was admitted off the waitlist because no one opted to join the waitlist from the pool of students given the option to do so. What’s more, the waitlist could shake out very differently for the Class of 2030. Let’s explain.

The yield rate (which describes the proportion of admitted students who choose to enroll each year) is a highly unpredictable metric that is more or less the sole determinant for waitlist acceptance rate. This little known factor determines how much extra space there is after the Regular Decision cycle to draw on the pool of waitlisted applicants.
