The flagship institution of the University System of Maryland, UMD is located just a 30-minute drive out of Washington, D.C. With over 30,000 undergraduates and an acceptance rate of 45%, the University of Maryland isn’t as selective as some other top public universities. Getting into UMD is just about as easy today as it was over 15 years ago.

Further Context on GPAs of University of Maryland Students

What do all these numbers mean? Well, even if getting into the University of Maryland is as easy now as it was 15 years ago, enrolled students still step onto campus with stellar GPAs. Last year, 91.06% of matriculated first-year students had perfect high school GPAs. Another 4.41% of the Class of 2029 had a GPA between 3.75 and 3.99. That means only 4.53% of the class had GPAs below 3.75. 

For the Class of 2028, we see a similar story. 93.64% of enrolled students had a 4.0 GPA. And 3.45% had a GPA between 3.75 and 3.99. That means a mere 2.91% of the class came in with a GPA lower than 3.75. 

And let’s look three years back at the Class of 2027. That year, 91.97% of incoming first-year students had perfect high school GPAs. 4.09% had a GPA between 3.75 and 3.99. That leaves only 3.94% of enrolled students in the Class of 2027 with a GPA below 3.75. 

Can Students Get into the Maryland with a Low GPA?

So you might be wondering: If you have a low GPA and you want to get into the University of Maryland – College Park, should you curb your enthusiasm? 

The answer is yes and no. While it’s possible that you can get into UMD with a low high school GPA, it’s not probable. You saw what small percentage of the past three classes at UMD had a GPA lower than 3.75. These numbers usually represent students who are exceptional cases, and have another way in. We’d wager that many, for example, are recruited athletes. It’s also important to recognize that, as a state school, the University of Maryland – College Park weighs whether applicants are applying from within the state or beyond Maryland’s borders. 

Even still, the University of Maryland has a holistic admissions review process. The admissions officers at UMD aren’t spending their days merely scanning report cards and glancing down at SAT or ACT scores. If that was all there was to it, they’d be out of a job. Instead, admissions officers are looking for exceptionally talented students who are going to make a mark on campus. They want go-getters who are going to be leaders in their research output and who will go on to become high-power alums helping to shape the country and the world. 

While exceptional students usually have high GPAs, there are other ways to demonstrate excellence.
