Before we can cover academics, let’s talk about acceptance rate. For the Class of 2029, 28.41% were granted admission between in-state, out-of-state, and international applicants. For the Class of 2028, 26.77% received acceptance letters, and for the Class of 2027, 24.76% were granted admission.

Does UC San Diego Have a Minimum GPA Requirement for Admission?

Applicants should also note that California residents need a GPA of 3.00 or higher to be eligible for admission, and non-residents of California need a GPA of 3.40 or higher to be eligible.

Further Context on GPAs of UC San Diego Students

While the data published for the Class of 2026 above might appear to indicate that UCSD maintains incredibly strict academic standards in which the vast majority of students who are admitted had 4.0s in high school, this is slightly misleading. Note that UCSD is reporting weighted GPA for this cycle, (and unweighted GPA for the following two cycles — don’t ask us why they’re inconsistent!) meaning that the proportions reported above in the third chart have an inflated skew towards 4.0. 

For the Classes of 2028 and 2027, the data reveal that the majority of each class were culled from the pool of applicants who graduated high school with GPAs in the 3.75 — 4.0 range.

Can I Get into UC San Diego with a Low GPA?

No, you must meet the minimum GPA requirements for admission (3.4 for non-California residents and 3.0 for California residents).

And even the students with GPAs in the low 3.0 range are quite rare. The reality is that many of these lackluster students possessed special statuses that gave them special consideration, like being recruited athletes or the children of major donors.
