The Ivy Coach Daily
University of California Irvine GPA Requirements
As a member of the prestigious University of California system, UC Irvine pulls no punches regarding admission selectivity. As is the case with many elite schools of Irvine’s caliber, Irvine admission officers have the luxury to be quite picky when discerning between its many thousands of applicants. But the primary criteria used to separate the wheat from the chaff is GPA.
Still, GPA isn’t everything, and there are plenty of other factors at play. So, just how important is academic performance in the UC Irvine admission process?
What is a Good GPA to Get Into UC Irvine
Before we can dive into the GPA side of this discussion, let’s review the acceptance rate at Irvine over recent admission cycles. For admission to the Class of 2029, the overall acceptance rate (including both in-state and out-of-state applicants) was 28.94%. For the Class of 2028, 28.78% were accepted, and for the Class of 2027, 25.75% were accepted.
Does UC Irvine Have a Minimum GPA Requirement for Admission?
Yes. California residents need a GPA of 3.00 or higher to be eligible for admission, and non-residents need a GPA of 3.40 or higher to be considered.
GPA Percentage of UC Irvine’s Class of 2029
While UC Irvine does not publish GPA data in the federally-mandated Common Data Set, as most other schools do, it has shared such data covering the Class of 2029 on its website, along with a spiel covering how admission officers at this public research university weigh GPA:
“If you’re like most applicants to UC Irvine, you excelled in high school or your current higher education institution. Congratulations on your success!
But there’s more to a UC Irvine student than a great academic record. At UC Irvine, we also value uniqueness. So whether or not you have the highest GPA, we want to know what distinguishes you from everyone else.
Use the following statistics as a general guide to selectivity and not as a predictor of your chance for admission to UC Irvine.
First-Year Median: 4.19
First-Year Middle 25% – 75%: 4.04-4.27
Unweighted GPA
First-Year Median: 3.95
First-Year Middle 25% – 75%: 3.84-4.00
Transfer GPA
Median GPA of CA Community College admits: 3.8”
Further Context on GPAs of UC Irvine Students
Irvine admission officers are quite right about valuing uniqueness alongside academic record. After all, they’ll probably be the first to say that great grades often cohabitate alongside a pretty dull personality. But the statistics they’ve shared also do not lie: the median unweighted GPA for the Class of 2029 is an impressive 3.95. And the 25th percentile for unweighted GPA came in at 3.84.
In other words, solid academic performance is the baseline expected of all competitive applicants. Only within this pool of academic hard hitters do UC Irvine admission officers curate their incoming classes.
Can I Get into Irvine with a Low GPA?
No — you must meet the minimum GPA requirements for admission (3.4 for non-California residents and 3.0 for California residents).
And even the students with GPAs in the low 3.0 range are quite rare. The reality is that many of these lackluster students possessed special statuses that gave them special consideration, like being recruited athletes or the children of major donors.
