New York University used to be for all the creative misfits out there, and it still is: they just had better have pretty good grades these days if they’d like to be admitted to this elite school. This top private university routinely rejects very qualified students. And yes, even the students with near-perfect grades and test scores aren’t safe! For the New York University Class of 2028, 18% of students boasted perfect GPAs. But then again, excellent grades and test scores aren’t everything in this college’s admissions process; NYU admittedly does not have relatively high academic standards for its students compared with other schools of its caliber.

So, what kind of GPA does a student need when applying to New York University? Though the data for the NYU Classes of 2029 and 2030 are not yet available, we can get a good picture by looking at the data from the three prior admissions cycles:

Just how tough is it to secure a spot at New York University? The acceptance rate for the Class of 2029 set a new record at 7.7%, surpassing the previous year’s 8.0% for the Class of 2028. The Class of 2027 saw 8.33% of applicants joining the purple Bobcats. In other words, getting in each year gets harder and harder!

Further Context on GPAs of NYU Students

18% of students who enrolled in the New York University Class of 2028 boasted perfect GPAs, while 23.1% of students in the New York University Class of 2027 did, and 23.2% of students in the New York University Class of 2026 graduated high school with a 4.0.

For the past two cycles, almost all the remaining students in each class had GPAs in the 3.75-3.99 range. However, an anomaly appears in the Class of 2026: 25.5% of admitted students had high school GPAs in the 3.25-3.49 range. This represents an even higher proportion than those with GPAs falling in that year’s 3.5-3.74 range! In other words, perfect grades are not as big of a qualification for admission at NYU as one might suspect.

Can I Get into New York University with a Low GPA?

While it’s certainly possible to get into New York University with a low GPA, that doesn’t mean it’s likely. For the Class of 2028, only 6% of admitted students to New York University had GPAs below 3.5. Still, in all likelihood, these weaker academic links fulfilled some other institutional need, such as being the children of major donors or being recruited athletes or public figures.
