The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is a worldwide leader in scientific and technological innovation. With an academic culture renowned for its rigor, MIT turns down many students for admission each year, even those with perfect grades and test scores. After all, GPA and test scores aren’t everything when it comes to admission, but they sure do count for a lot! For the MIT Class of 2026, 97% of students graduated in the top tenth of their graduating class. Still, top grades and scores are just one component of a holistic admissions process.

What kind of GPA does a student need when applying to MIT? The data for MIT’s Classes of 2029 and 2030 are not yet available, and MIT hasn’t reported the GPA breakdown for any of its recently admitted cohorts to The Common Data Set Initiative, a voluntary effort among colleges to aid all those involved in a student’s transition to higher education. That being said, we can still get a good understanding of what kind of grades MIT students are stepping into Cambridge with by looking at the high school class rank of recently admitted classes.

First, just how difficult is it to get into MIT? For applicants to MIT’s Class of 2029, only 4.5% earned admission. The year prior, for the Class of 2028, the same acceptance rate — 4.5% — was reported. For the Class of 2027, 3.94% woke up to good news on their decision day.

What is a Good GPA for Getting into MIT?

The following is the class rank breakdown of the members of MIT’s Class of 2026, as reported in MIT’s 2022-23 Common Data Set. Unfortunately, MIT hasn’t reported any GPA data for recently admitted cohorts, so this class rank data is the closest to ascertaining the GPA requirements for admission.

Further Context on GPAs of MIT Students

Even though we don’t yet have the hard data to back up this assertion, it’s quite likely that the vast majority of those who earn admission to MIT boast 4.0s, as is the case with most other highly selective colleges of its caliber. Moreover, we at Ivy Coach would venture to guess that all of MIT admits to the Class of 2029 had a GPA in excess of 2.5, and 95% over 3.5.

But remember, while most students admitted to MIT choose to enroll (MIT often boasts a yield of over 70%), this figure only accounts for those who get in. Imagine the many students with perfect grades and test scores who get rejected!

For this reason, we refuse to assuage the doubts of parents who rattle off their child’s GPA during complimentary consultations with Ivy Coach and want to know if they can get into MIT. Without context — including the high school attended, the rigor of the student’s coursework, their extracurriculars, essays, letters of recommendation, and so much more — the answer would be less than meaningless. 

MIT, after all, would be remiss not to take other admissions considerations into account when deciding between students. There are plenty of dull students out there with perfect grades, after all!

Can My Child Get into MIT with a Low GPA?

While it’s certainly possible to get into MIT with a low GPA, as the numbers bear out, it’s improbable. Keep in mind that most of the students who get into MIT without stellar grades are bringing something else to the table. Admissions officers are willing to overlook poor grades for applicants who meet institutional needs (e.g., a star quarterback for the football team, a development case, etc.).
