About Trinity College

Trinity is located in Hartford, the capital city of Connecticut. Though it’s in an urban setting, Trinity’s campus is a time machine. Full of quintessential Gothic architecture, it’ll take you back to an era of beautiful buildings, philosophical ideals, and tight-knit community. The main part of Trinity’s campus is referred to as “Long Walk” by students. It’s exactly what it sounds like: a long, continuous stretch of buildings that you can stroll by with friends, professors, or on your own, contemplating everything you’ve learned through Trinity’s liberal arts curriculum. 

Which brings us to academics at Trinity. Trinity students tend to major in the social sciences, with economics, political science, sociology, and psychology among the most popular majors. Throughout the college, there’s a strong emphasis on writing and discussion, ensuring that Trinity students leave with sharp analytical skills. Trinity’s 9:1 student-faculty ratio means that every student on campus gets heaps of mentorship and develops formative relationships with professors. 

Trinity has developed a strong reputation for maintaining a balance between a traditional liberal arts education and preprofessional opportunities. Many of these opportunities arise through student groups on campus like the Trinity College Investment Fund, Trinity College Democrats, and the Pre-Law Society.

The acceptance rate for Trinity College’s Class of 2029 was 29%. That makes it a competitive school to get into. And, further, it means getting in will require some strategic planning (and the help of Ivy Coach’s former college admissions officers certainly wouldn’t hurt). 

Trinity College Admissions Requirements

There’s not a one-size-fits-all formula for getting into Trinity (or to any school, for that matter). Trinity, like most selective liberal arts colleges, maintains a holistic application review process, meaning they consider each applicant in his or her specific context. In their own words, Trinity says they place emphasis on “high school transcripts, recommendation letters, leadership positions, work history, involvement in school and community activities, and other characteristics that predict success.” Let’s look at what some of these components actually look like for admits to Trinity College from previous admissions cycles. 

What Kind of GPA Is Necessary To Get Into Trinity?

The following is the class rank breakdown of Trinity’s Class of 2028 members, as reported in the 2024-25 Common Data Set. Unfortunately, the university hasn’t reported any GPA data for recently admitted cohorts, so the class rank data below is the closest to gauging the GPA requirements for admission in the Trinity admissions process.

While the data reported indicate that 53% of students admitted to Trinity’s Class of 2028 graduated in the top tenth percent of their high school class, it should be noted that because fewer than 20% of students reported their high school rank, this data isn’t super reliable. Still, it’s a pretty good rule of thumb that you should, at the very least, be graduating in the top quarter of your graduating class if you have your sights set on Trinity.

What Kind of SAT or ACT Scores Are Needed To Get Into Trinity College?  

In 2015, Trinity College became an early adopter of the now very popular test-optional admissions policy. Only 10% of applicants (53 people) submitted test scores to the Trinity Class of 2028, which is low even for test-optional schools. We at Ivy Coach firmly believe that doing well on the SAT or ACT and submitting scores always significantly boosts an applicant’s shot at admission, even to test-optional schools. 

The average score among the 38 applicants who submitted SAT results to the Trinity Class of 2028 was a 1385. The average score among the 15 applicants who submitted ACT scores was a 32. Obviously, with such small sample sizes, these numbers don’t mean much. But they are still worth nothing as you and your child consider how you’ll navigate standardized testing. 

What Classes Do Students Need to Take to Get Into Trinity?

Trinity does not officially list any minimum course preparation in order to be considered for admission. Here’s what we can say, though: we at Ivy Coach know that highly selective colleges want to see students excelling in each core subject (English, history, math, science, and foreign language) all four years of high school. In fact, they expect to see five years for foreign language since most students begin their first level of foreign language in eighth grade. As you read earlier, though Trinity College reviews applications holistically, the first thing they consider is an applicant’s transcript. 

What Kinds of Extracurriculars Does Trinity College Like To See?

We at Ivy Coach count myth-busting among our job requirements. The number one myth we bust? That college admissions officers are looking for “well-rounded” applicants. The jack of all trades is also the master of none. Trinity College does not want a student who is decent in many disparate arenas; they want a student who is the number one person in a particular field and who will go on to become a global leader in that field, touting the Trinity College name as they reach such awesome heights. In terms of extracurriculars, that means applicants are far better advised to become an expert or national award winner at one endeavor, rather than spreading themself thin across various pursuits. 

Trinity College Application Requirements

Trinity accepts The Common Application. They require only one letter of recommendation from a teacher. Trinity gives students the option of responding to the following prompt: 

Please consider writing an additional optional essay that focuses on your specific interest in Trinity College. In 300 words or less, please write an essay about the following prompt. The identities you claim, the challenges you face, and the successes you enjoy shape the background for your college experience to come. What is an aspect of your background that you are excited to share and/or explore as a member of the Trinity community and why?

In our expert opinion, “optional” usually means “extremely, super-duper, ultra, uber, highly, emphatically encouraged,” perhaps even veering into “required” territory. So, definitely write that 300–word essay. 

Who Should Students Ask For Letters of Recommendation For Trinity College? 

Trinity applicants should ask a junior year teacher in a core subject and it should be a teacher with whom they’ve had a positive, formative, close relationship. Ideally, the teacher’s subject area should fold in well with the rest of the student’s application. If a student is hoping to be the next great Jane Austen scholar, it wouldn’t make a ton of sense if their recommender were their Physics teacher. 

Does Trinity College Require an Interview? 

They don’t require one, but they provide students with the option and even go so far as to say that they are “strongly recommended.” In other words, if you want to get into Trinity, do the interview. 

What Are Trinity College’s Application Deadlines? 

Early Decision I applications to Trinity College are due November 15th. Early Decision II and Regular Decision applications are due January 15th.
