The Florida Gators are famously a competitive Division I athletic program, but the University of Florida also boasts competitive business, engineering, and agricultural programs. If you want to make gains, you might just want to spend the next four years in Gainesville.

The overall acceptance rate for the University of Florida Class of 2029 was selective at only 19.77%, which becomes particularly striking when you consider that the student body numbers over 30,000 students. Obviously, GPA, standardized testing scores, and extracurricular achievements are the key components of a successful application to the University of Florida and to any school. That being said, what do these components actually look like for Florida admits? Without further ado, let’s dive in!

What Kind of SAT or ACT Scores Are Needed To Get Into the University of Florida?

The average SAT score for the University of Florida Class of 2028 was a 1400, and the average ACT score was a 31. The University of Florida is not a test-optional school. 

What Classes Do Students Need to Take to Get Into Florida?

The University of Florida lists the following as its minimum academic requirements for admission: 

• 4 years of English (with substantial writing)
• 4 years of Mathematics (at or above the Algebra 1 level)
• 3 years of Natural Sciences (two units must include a laboratory)
• 3 years of Social Sciences
• 2 years of a foreign language (must be sequential)

Of course, we’d never recommend merely three years in any core subject. We at Ivy Coach know that highly selective colleges like the University of Florida want to see students excelling in each core subject (English, history, math, science, and foreign language) all four years of high school. In fact, they expect to see five years for foreign language since most students begin their first level of foreign language in eighth grade.

What Kinds of Extracurriculars Does the University of Florida Like To See?

We’re going to clear up a common misunderstanding: highly selective colleges are not looking for well-rounded students. They’re looking for a well-rounded student body comprised of students who are each singularly talented. 

In terms of extracurriculars, that means the University of Florida is looking for depth over breadth. If you’re a member of the debate team, the robotics team, the field hockey team, and the drama department…well, then, you’re merely a member of those groups. You don’t stand out in any of these pursuits. The University of Florida would much rather accept a nationally ranked debate champ than a kid who spent an hour or two on debate a week because he spent the rest forgetting Shakespeare lines and fumbling the ball in football practice. 

The University of Florida Application Requirements

The University of Florida accepts the Common Application. They do not accept letters of recommendation. However, they ask all students to respond to the following supplemental essay:

• Please provide more details on your most meaningful commitment outside of the classroom while in high school and explain why it was meaningful. This could be related to an extracurricular activity, work, volunteering, an academic activity, family responsibility, or any other non-classroom activity. (250 words)

Additionally, for those applying to the Honors College, there is a second supplemental essay: 

• In today’s rapidly evolving world, artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping how we learn, work, and interact with one another. It influences everything from the classroom to the workforce and is becoming an integral part of modern education, especially at the University of Florida. As AI continues to advance, however, there is a growing conversation about the need to balance technological innovation with critical thinking, creativity, and human connection – all attributes of an honors education. Reflecting on this, how do you plan to navigate this evolving landscape during your college experience through your academic study, learning opportunities, and extracurricular activities? How do you hope the Honors Program will impact the way you learn and interact with others? (400 word maximum)

No, the University of Florida does not require an interview, nor do they offer one. 

What Are Florida’s Application Deadlines? 

Early Action applications to Florida are due November 1st. Regular Decision applications are due January 15th.
