If your child is a budding social rights activist, takes to experimental learning, and wouldn’t mind spending the next four years in sunny California, Pitzer College might just be the place for them. You’re likely wondering: What makes a successful application to Pitzer? We’re going to get into that, but first let’s get an overview of what Pitzer has to offer. 

About Pitzer College 

Pitzer is located in Claremont, California, and is part of the Claremont Colleges, a consortium of seven different schools that share an adjoining campus layout. The 7 Cs consist of five undergraduate schools (Pitzer College, Pomona College, Claremont McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College, Scripps College) and two graduate schools (Claremont Graduate University and the Keck Graduate Institute). Students at Pitzer get to cross-register with all these other schools. And, with only 1,200 undergraduate students, Pitzer is quite the small school. This means that students at Pitzer are in a unique position: they get a tight-knit community with access to resources like the engineering labs at Harvey Mudd and the Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies department at Scripps. 

The acceptance rate to Pitzer for the Class of 2028 (the most recently available data) was a mere 16.6%. That means getting in will require strategic planning (and the help of Ivy Coach’s college admissions experts certainly wouldn’t hurt!).

There is no copy-and-paste format for a successful application to Pitzer, or to any college for that matter.  It won’t come as a surprise to you that strong grades, high test scores, and notable extracurricular achievements form the trifecta of a good college application. But admissions officers look at each student in his or her own context. Let’s look at what some of the common denominators among admits to Pitzer are. 

What Kind of GPA Is Necessary To Get Into Pitzer University?

Pitzer has not yet released the data for the Class of 2029 (the most recently admitted class), but the following chart is a breakdown of the GPA for the Class of 2028, as reported to the  2024-2025 Common Data Set.

45.62% of admits to the Pitzer College Class of 2028 had 4.0s in high school. An additional 34.2% had GPAs between 3.75 and 3.99. This means that Pitzer admits are mighty competitive students. 

What Kind of SAT or ACT Scores Are Needed To Get Into Pitzer?

None! That’s right: Pitzer isn’t just test-optional, it’s “test-free,” meaning they do not consider SAT or ACT scores in their admissions evaluation.

What Classes Do Students Need to Take to Get Into Pitzer?

Pitzer lists the following as their minimum academic requirements for applicants: 

• Four years of English, especially courses that emphasize writing.
• At least three years each of:
  • Foreign language
  • Mathematics
  • Social, behavioral, and natural sciences

Of course, we at Ivy Coach would not recommend merely three years in any core subject. Highly selective colleges like Pitzer want to see students excelling in each core subject (English, history, math, science, and foreign language) all four years of high school. In fact, they expect to see five years for foreign language since most students begin their first level of foreign language in eighth grade.

What Kinds of Extracurriculars Does Pitzer University Like To See?

We’re going to clear up a common misunderstanding: highly selective colleges are not looking for well-rounded students. They’re looking for a well-rounded student body comprised of students who are each singularly talented. 

In terms of extracurriculars, that means Pitzer is looking for depth over breadth. If you’re a member of the debate team, the robotics team, the field hockey team, and the drama department…well, then, you’re merely a member of those groups. You don’t stand out in any of these pursuits. Pitzer would much rather accept a nationally ranked debate champ than a kid who spent an hour or two on debate a week because he spent the rest forgetting Shakespeare lines and fumbling the ball in football practice. 

Pitzer Application Requirements

Pitzer accepts the Common Application. Additionally, they ask applicants to send one letter of recommendation and two supplemental essays. Last year’s prompts were:

Who Should Students Ask For Letters of Recommendation For Pitzer? 

Pitzer applicants should ask two teachers, ideally two junior year teachers in core subjects. Obviously, the applicant should have a good relationship with the teacher or at least have performed well in their class. In addition, at least one of the recommenders’ subject area should be related to the student’s hook: if a student’s singular hook is studying fruit fly DNA, it wouldn’t make sense if their recommenders were their History and English teachers. 

Does Pitzer University Require An Interview? 

Pitzer does not require an interview, but they do offer interviews, both in-person and virtual.

What Are Pitzer’s Application Deadlines? 

Early Decision I applications are due on Nov. 15. Early Decision II and Regular Decision applications are due Jan. 12.
