Northeastern University is located in Boston, Massachusetts (though it recently announced expansion plans into New York, New York). Its distinctive feature is its Co-op program, which allows students to complete between 2 and 3 full-time, paid work experiences (6 months each) before graduating. This form of experiential learning sees students alternating between periods of academic study and work experiences in their fields of interest. Northeastern’s cooperative program is one of the largest and most innovative in the world, and students can connect with virtually any industry they want to during their time in Boston. Because of the cooperative element, most students at Northeastern take an additional year of study, graduating within five years as opposed to four years. 

And no school has quite mastered the art of rising the ranks of institutional prestige quite like Northeastern, which made waves for its meteoric rise to the upper echelons of selectivity over a short period, in no small part thanks to the masterful manipulation of its US News ranking among the top national universities. The acceptance rate to the Northeastern Class of 2024 was 20.48%; five years later, for the Class of 2029, that number had dropped to 5.62%. That’s a number on par with many Ivy League institutions. Almost all of Northeastern University’s Class of 2028 achieved perfect GPAs, which should convey in no uncertain terms the importance of stellar academic performance for Northeastern admissions. But grades and test scores aren’t the only factors at play here.

What Kind of SAT or ACT Scores Are Needed To Get Into Northeastern University?

The average SAT score for the Northeastern Class of 2028 was 1490, and the average ACT score was 34. These are some mighty high scores! What Classes Do Students Need to Take to Get Into Northeastern University?

Northeastern does not explicitly state any minimum high school course preparation for applicants. However, we at Ivy Coach know that colleges want to see students excelling in each core subject (English, history, math, science, and foreign language) all four years of high school. Additionally, they expect students to take advantage of any AP or other advanced courses on offer to them. 

What Kinds of Extracurriculars Does Northeastern University Like To See?

We at Ivy Coach count myth-busting among our job requirements. The number one myth we bust? That college admissions officers are looking for “well-rounded” applicants. The jack of all trades is also the master of none. Northeastern does not want a student who is decent in many disparate arenas; they want a student who is the number one person in a particular field and who will go on to become a global leader in that field, touting the Northeastern name as they reach such awesome heights. In terms of extracurriculars, that means applicants are better advised to become an expert or national award winner at one endeavor, rather than spreading themself thin across various pursuits. 

Northeastern Application Requirements

Northeastern University accepts The Common App. and Coalition App. They ask for one letter of recommendation from a counselor and one from a teacher. Northeastern does not ask for a supplemental essay, another tactic they use to boost their US News ranking. 

Who Should Students Ask For Letters of Recommendation For Northeastern? 

Northeastern applicants should ask a junior year teacher in a core subject with whom they’ve had a good relationship and in whose class they excelled. In addition, the recommender’s subject areas should fold in neatly with the rest of the student’s application: if an applicant wants to be the next great American Revolution historian, they should probably ask their APUSH teacher.
