What Is New York University?

Situated in the heart of Lower Manhattan, New York, NYU’s campus houses a student body consisting of 11,761 full-time male undergraduates and 16,522 full-time female undergraduates, for a total undergraduate population of 29,471 (counting part-timers and gender nonconforming students).

New York University Admissions Requirements

Getting into NYU is never guaranteed, as even perfect grades and test scores don’t guarantee admission. However, understanding the average academic profile of admitted students can help assess the competitiveness of any application.

New York University GPA Requirements

NYU has taken a cue from most of its elite college counterparts and doesn’t set down any strict minimum GPA requirements for applicants, as is the case at most other schools of its caliber. However, what NYU admissions officers say and how they actually evaluate applicants are two entirely different matters.

According to the 2025-2026 Common Data Set, 17.2% of NYU admits to the Class of 2029 graduated high school with a 4.0, and 54.7% graduated with a GPA between 3.75 and 3.99. The average GPA was 3.81 for admitted students. 

While this data does not amount to a strict ban on admitting students with lackluster grades, it underscores just how important strong academic performance is to NYU admissions officers!

Does NYU Look at Class Rank?

NYU doesn’t publish class rank data for its admitted students; however, given its above GPA data, we can reasonably infer that the majority of admitted NYU students graduate in the top 10% of their high school’s graduating classes.

New York University SAT/ACT Score Requirements

NYU is one of the few remaining test-optional schools, meaning applicants do not have to submit SAT or ACT scores to gain admission. However, as loyal readers of Ivy Coach’s admissions blog know all too well, optional never means optional in the case of elite college admissions. Students who really mean business will certainly submit their test scores.

Does NYU Superscore Students’ SAT or ACT scores?

A superscore takes the highest section scores from each test attempt to evaluate admissions. NYU superscores both the SAT and the ACT.

However, submitting multiple test scores can be risky. It can imply to NYU that you had to put in more effort than many other applicants to achieve your scores, which is not the best impression. Students should only submit multiple scores if the goal is to create a superscore.

What High School Courses Does New York University Require?

NYU’s Undergraduate Admission recommends the following high school curriculum:

• English/Writing – 4 years
• History/Social Studies – 3 to 4 years
• Mathematics – 3 to 4 years
• Laboratory Sciences – 3 to 4 years
• Foreign Language – 3 to 4 years

Of course, it would be unwise to take only three years of science, history, foreign language, or math classes. All highly selective colleges across America, NYU or otherwise, expect applicants to excel in their core subjects for all four years of high school (and when it comes to foreign language, it is ideal to begin in eighth grade).

What Extracurriculars Does New York University Look For in Applicants?

Contrary to popular belief, NYU is not seeking applicants with well-rounded profiles. Instead, NYU looks for students who have excelled extracurricularly in specific areas, students we at Ivy Coach term as possessing a “singular hook.”

Admissions committees at highly selective colleges across the United States value students who are experts in their chosen fields, whether that expertise lies in Classics research, competitive mathematics, or innovative engineering. NYU applicants must complete The Common Application, including the NYU-specific supplemental essays, a counselor recommendation or a teacher recommendation (with some schools requiring additional letters), and have the option to submit test scores.

Who to Ask For Letters of Recommendation

Applicants to NYU should ask a teacher or teachers (depending on the program) for their recommendation[s], ideally a junior year teacher in a core subject, i.e., science, social studies, mathematics, a foreign language, or English.

Does NYU Require an Alumni Interview?

NYU only conducts alumni interviews for a select few of its undergraduate applicants applying to specific programs. In any event, the interview process is one of the least important aspects of the NYU admissions process.

What are New York University’s Supplemental Essay Topics?

Applicants to NYU are asked to complete a question that forms one of the most important components of the application.  

The NYU supplemental essay question, to which applicants should respond in 250 words or fewer, is as follows:

We are looking for students who want to be bridge builders—students who can connect people, groups, and ideas to span divides, foster understanding, and promote collaboration within a dynamic, interconnected, and vibrant global academic community. We are eager for you to tell us how your experiences have helped you understand what qualities and efforts are needed to bridge divides so that people can better learn and work together:

• Please consider one or more of the following questions in your essay:
• Tell us about a time you encountered a perspective different from your own. What did you learn—about yourself, the other person, or the world?
• Tell us about an experience you’ve had working with others who have different backgrounds or perspectives. What challenges did your group face? Did you overcome them, and if so, how? What role did you try to play in helping people to work together, and what did you learn from your efforts?
• Tell us about someone you’ve observed who does a particularly good job helping people think or work together. How does this person set the stage for common exploration or work? How do they react when difficulties or dissensions arise?

New York University Application Deadlines

NYU has three admissions rounds: Early Decision I, Early Decision II, and Regular Decision.

Binding Early Decision I and II applications are due on November 1st and January 1st of each year, respectively, with decisions rendered by December 15th and February 15th. Non-binding Regular Decision applications are due on January 5th of each year, with a decision release slated for April 1st.
