Georgetown University Waitlist Acceptance Rate

Hoping to find out if your child has a genuine shot of earning admission to Georgetown University off the waitlist? If so, you’ve come to the right place. Below are Georgetown’s waitlist admissions statistics for the Class of 2026 through 2005, covering 22 years of waitlist statistics for the oldest Catholic and Jesuit institution of higher learning in America.

These figures are drawn directly from Georgetown’s reporting to The Common Data Set, reporting that is quite substantive since Georgetown’s longtime Dean of Admissions Charles Deacon, a favorite of Ivy Coach’s blog, has a reputation for his forthrightness and tell-it-like-it-is approach to running the school’s admissions office.

How Hard Is It to Get Off of the Georgetown Waitlist?

Over the last 22 years (from 2022 through 2001), Georgetown reported its waitlist admissions statistics for all but six of those years. Over those 16 years, Georgetown’s average waitlist acceptance rate has stood at 7.49%.

But like other elite universities, Georgetown’s waitlist acceptance rate can vary year-over-year. That said, unlike at other elite universities, over the 16 years in which Georgetown has reported waitlist data in the 21st century, there has never been a year in which the school did not turn to its waitlist.

There are other years in which Georgetown reaches deep into its waitlist, such as the 275 students admitted out of limbo for the Class of 2024, the 86 for the Class of 2023, the 80 for the Class of 2021, the 149 for the Class of 2020, the 114 for the Class of 2019, the 84 for the Class of 2017, the 158 for the Class of 2014, the 138 for the Class of 2008, and the 233 for the Class of 2007.

And there are years in which Georgetown accepts few students out of limbo, such as the 16 students admitted out of limbo for the Class of 2022, the two for the Class of 2016, the 16 for the Class of 2011, and the 15 for the Class of 2009.

The sole determinant of how far Georgetown will reach down its waitlist is the school’s yield or the percentage of admitted students who choose to enroll the following year. The higher Georgetown’s yield, the lower the likelihood the school will reach deep into its waitlist. When Georgetown admitted 275 students off its waitlist to the Class of 2024, it was because of all the admitted students who opted to take gap years due to the onset of the pandemic.

As we like to tell our students at Ivy Coach, there are some things they can control in the elite college admissions process, and some things are left to fate. How far Georgetown will reach down its waitlist falls into the latter category, though believers in the Jesuit tradition may turn to prayer to help push that fate in the right direction.

Your Chances of Admission to Georgetown After Being Waitlisted with Ivy Coach’s Help

Over the last 30 years, around 35% of students who first come to Ivy Coach after being placed on the Georgetown waitlist earn admission.

Mathematically, this means that 65% of students who first come to Ivy Coach after being waitlisted by Georgetown do not ultimately get in. In short, we can’t give you a great chance of admission off the Georgetown waitlist — no one can. All we can do is give you the best chance possible, and if that’s not enough for you, then we are not the right fit.

So why does Ivy Coach have such success with Georgetown’s waitlist? It all comes down to Ivy Coach’s tried and true method of optimizing a student’s chances for admission after Georgetown kicked the can on rendering a final verdict. That two-step process is as follows:

  1. Complete Ivy Coach’s PostMortem application review. We must see what a student did right and what they did wrong. The narrative we help craft can’t be out of left field. Rather, it needs to be consistent with the story conveyed in the Georgetown application and in all of those many Georgetown essays — just told much more compellingly.
  2.  Submit a compelling Letter of Continued Interest. Most students know that doing nothing is not the answer and that they should submit a letter after being placed on a college’s waitlist if they hope to earn admission. And most students know they should send that letter in with great urgency. Yet most students send the wrong kind of letter. Ivy Coach’s letters to Georgetown contain no classless brags or updates. It’s a big reason why they’re so successful. We inspire Georgetown admissions officers to root for our students!
