This hasn’t been an easy year for many of the most prestigious colleges in America, with the exception of Duke University (with the exception of their men’s basketball team’s heartbreaking loss in March Madness)! Across both admissions rounds, Duke received a record-setting 61,935 applications, resulting in the lowest overall acceptance rate ever recorded at the home of the Blue Devils. This newest crop of Regular Decision admits joins the 847 Early Decision admits who received the fantastic news of their admission this past December. 

Duke admissions officers are likely congratulating themselves on yet another record-setting year, alongside schools like Vanderbilt University and the University of Notre Dame, just as other notable schools, namely the Ivy League, continue the trend toward admissions secrecy. How do Duke’s admissions statistics bode for the fate of the troubled Ivy League? Read on to hear Ivy Coach’s take on this historical upset in higher education.

Duke University Acceptance Rate and Statistics (Class of 2030 – Class of 2018)

Duke Class of 2030 Statistics in a Historical Perspective

This was, by and large, the best year on record for Duke. The school received over 3,000 more applications than last year, resulting in an all-time low acceptance rate that doesn’t come as much of a surprise, given that the Duke acceptance rate over time is essentially a diagonal line straight to the ground. Admissions officers at Duke are surely celebrating their victory lap with some pats on the back.

Profile of Duke Admits to the Class of 2030

According to reporting by The Duke Chronicle, Duke has reported far less demographic data on this year’s admits than in previous years, a trend that falls in line with other elite universities that are trepidatious about showing their cards to the media. We do not know the racial demographics or the proportion of Pell Grant recipients (which has gotten Duke in some hot water in years past for being lower than at other elite institutions!).

As a matter of fact, the only data point we do have access to covers the geographic makeup of this year’s Blue Devils: “This year’s incoming class hails from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and more than 55 countries.” But that’s all she wrote!

Is Duke Eclipsing Other Ivy League Schools?

In stark contrast to this triumphant showing by Duke, the Ivy League has not set any new records this year (among schools that have released the data!). Could it be that a new set of southern colleges, namely, Duke, Vanderbilt, Emory, and Rice, are ascending to fill the vacuum left by Ivy League schools that have been tormented by a couple of years of horrendous PR and backlashes of student speech and safety? It’s quite possible.
