According to the 2026 US News & World Report annual college ranking, Vanderbilt is ranked the 17th-best college in the United States. Getting into Vanderbilt is naturally no cakewalk. How should prospective Commodores go about planning their applications?

What Is Vanderbilt University?

Located in Nashville, Tennessee, Vanderbilt consists of a student body of 7,366 undergraduates. According to the 2025-26 Common Data Set, 3,444 full-time undergraduate males and 3,866 undergraduate females are currently enrolled. The Vanderbilt Hustler reports that students in the Class of 2030 hail from all 50 states and represent 65 countries.

Vanderbilt Admissions Requirements

Getting into Vanderbilt requires more than just great grades (although those are certainly important, too!). It takes more than just a few strong letters of recommendation. To truly stand a chance of earning admission to this highly competitive university, students must submit an application centered on their unique singular hook.

Vanderbilt University GPA Requirements

There is, technically, no minimum GPA requirement to get into Vanderbilt, and admissions officers certainly would not claim otherwise to the many starry-eyed but underqualified applicants who help drive down Vanderbilt’s acceptance rate when they apply. However, the Common Data Set tells a different story: 31.6% of admitted students in the Class of 2029, the most recent class with available data, had a 4.0 GPA on their high school transcripts.

So, while there is no official minimum GPA requirement for Vanderbilt admission, in practice, having a 4.0 is highly recommended.

Does Vanderbilt University Look at Class Rank?

Vanderbilt admissions officers admitted 91% of the Class of 2029 from a pool of students graduating in the top 10% of their respective high school graduating classes, as per The Common Data Set.

Vanderbilt SAT/ACT Score Requirements

Vanderbilt has kept its test-optional policy in place through the 2026-27 admissions cycle, meaning your application does not require SAT and ACT scores. However, as is the case with much of the advice we offer on this list, we do not recommend taking Vanderbilt’s word for it that they don’t care if you submit test scores. The reality is that students who don’t submit scores will always be at a disadvantage compared to those who do. Let’s look at the data:

Does Vanderbilt University Superscore Students’ SAT or ACT scores?

A superscore combines the highest section scores from each individual test sitting for admissions evaluation. Vanderbilt does superscore results from both the SAT and ACT, but students interested in doing so should proceed with caution.

At Ivy Coach, we caution against submitting more than one test administration for admissions evaluation. Submitting multiple scores shows Vanderbilt that you had to work harder than many to achieve your highest scores and that your testing performance has inconsistencies. That said, while it’s not ideal, sometimes students have no choice but to superscore.

What High School Courses Does Vandy Require?

Vanderbilt recommends the following high school curriculum to prepare for the academic rigor of the College:

Most successful candidates will present a curriculum that includes the equivalent of five academic subjects each year for four years. Recommended course work includes 4 units of English, 4 units of mathematics, 4 units of natural science, 2 units of foreign language, 2 units of social science/humanities, and 4 units of additional course work in these areas, or other academic courses such as engineering science, computer science, social science or natural science research, or advanced work in the humanities. Close attention will be paid to the rigor of course work presented. It is highly recommended that candidates applying to the School of Engineering have taken calculus, calculus-based physics, and chemistry.

Of course, it’s not advisable to take social studies or foreign language (or any core subject, for that matter) for fewer than four years. Highly selective institutions across America look for students who have excelled in their core subjects for all four years of high school. What’s more, foreign language study should begin in the eighth grade.

What Extracurriculars Does Vanderbilt Look For in Applicants?

There is no silver bullet in extracurricular activities that will automatically wow Vanderbilt admissions officers. Applicants should focus their efforts on pursuing their one passion or specialty to the fullest extent possible.

And no, before anyone gets too excited, Vanderbilt is not seeking well-rounded students. Such students do not cut it because they do not contribute much to the variety of an incoming class. On the other hand, the sustainability specialist, trailblazing advocate, or budding mathematician will always stand out over the well-rounded applicant.

Vanderbilt accepts both The Common Application and the Coalition Application. Students must submit a counselor letter of recommendation, two teacher letters of recommendation, a Vanderbilt-specific supplemental essay response, and an optional 90-second Glimpse video.

Who to Ask For Letters of Recommendation

Applicants to Vanderbilt should ask two teachers, ideally two junior year teachers in core subjects, in addition to their school counselor, for letters of recommendation.

No, Vanderbilt only allows international students to schedule an optional remote interview via Initial View.

What is Vanderbilt’s Video Prompt?

U.S. citizens, including undocumented students, attending high school in the U.S., may submit a 60-90 second video through Glimpse. No need for fancy editing or exotic filming locations that might render you an unlikeable or out-of-touch applicant.

What are Vanderbilt’s Supplemental Essay Topics?

In addition to the Common Application’s Personal Statement or the Coalition essay, Vanderbilt applicants have to complete a Vanderbilt-specific question, which is as follows:

Vanderbilt University Application Deadlines

Vanderbilt’s three admissions rounds are termed Early Decision I, Early Decision II, and Regular Decision. 

Early Decision I applications are due on November 1st of each year. Admission through this round is binding, as is the case with Early Decision II applications due on January 1st of each year. Regular Decision applications are typically due on January 1st of each year.
