Cornell University is a major force in the world of higher education, with a growing reputation as a top producer of the world’s academic, professional, and creative talent. Many try and fail to achieve admission into Cornell, which came in at #12 on the 2026 US News & World Report annual college ranking. With a select number of highly prestigious undergraduate programs that each have incredibly low acceptance rates, Cornell presents a puzzle for applicants. How should they go about trying to get admitted?

What Is Cornell University?

Cornell University is an Ivy League institution in Ithaca, New York. The campus consists of a student body with 16,138 undergraduates. According to the 2025-26 Common Data Set, 7,414 full-time undergraduate males and 8,690 undergraduate females are currently enrolled. According to a university press release, the Class of 2030 hails from 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, as well as 102 countries.

Cornell Admissions Requirements

The Big Red has its reputation for a reason, and one of those reasons is that admissions officers there are highly particular about who they admit. Every year, countless students with perfect grades and test scores face rejection, but those who do get in share some common characteristics. By reviewing the characteristics of competitive applicants, and the strategies they use to gain admission, a clearer picture of how to get in emerges.

What Are Cornell’s GPA Requirements?

As with the vast majority of elite colleges, there is no minimum GPA or testing requirement to get into Cornell as academic performance is just one of several dimensions that are evaluated. However, Cornell still values students who have challenged themselves by taking the most rigorous coursework available to them, and reward students with stellar grades and test scores with a far higher chance of being admitted.

Does Cornell Look at Class Rank?

According to the Common Data Set, 84% of enrollees in the Class of 2029 graduated in the top tenth of their high school graduating class. We don’t have strict GPA data on these admits, but reading between the lines reveals that having near perfect grades is essentially a de facto requirement for admission (although our readers should note that many prestigious high schools do not calculate class rank).

So, is a 4.0 GPA (or higher) necessary to be admitted to Cornell? Not necessarily, but it sure does help!

Cornell University SAT/ACT Score Requirements

Students are required to submit either an SAT or an ACT score for admission to Cornell.

Amongst members of the Cornell Class of 2029, 43% submitted SAT scores and 13% submitted ACT scores (reflecting Cornell’s test-optional status prior to its switch back to mandatory testing).

Does Cornell Superscore Students’ SAT or ACT scores?

A superscore combines the highest section scores from each individual test sitting for admissions evaluation. The university states that it “For the SAT, Cornell considers the highest section scores across test dates and participates in the College Board Score Choice program. For the ACT, Cornell will consider the ACT-provided superscore and the highest sections scores across all test dates.”

At Ivy Coach, we caution against submitting more than one test administration for admissions evaluation. It shows Cornell that you had to work harder than many to achieve your highest scores, and that your testing performance has inconsistencies. That said, while it’s not ideal, sometimes students have no choice but to superscore.

What High School Courses Does Cornell Require?

Cornell recommends the following high school curriculum to prepare for the academic rigor of the College of Arts and Sciences, but note that these requirements change according to which undergraduate program one applies:

“16 units, including 4 of English, 3 of mathematics (including pre-calculus), 3 of science, and 3 units of one foreign language (for heritage speakers or students who have initiated a foreign language sequence before high school, completion of at least the third level (e.g. Spanish 3)).

Recommended additional preparation:

• An additional unit of advanced mathematics and science”

Despite these stated requirements, it is not advisable to take history (or any core subject, for that matter) for fewer than four years. Highly selective institutions across America look for students who have excelled in their core subjects for all four years of high school. What’s more, foreign language study should begin by eighth grade.

What Extracurriculars Does Cornell Look For in Applicants?

There is no silver bullet extracurricular activity that will automatically wow Cornell admissions officers. Applicants should focus their efforts on pursuing their one passion or specialty to the fullest extent possible. Cornell prizes such students who have pursued a “singular hook” that clarifies how they will take advantage of the many resources and opportunities available on campus.

And just in case we at Ivy Coach have not made ourselves clear enough on this point, well-rounded students do not cut it, because they do not contribute much to the variety of an incoming class. The world-class painter, groundbreaking scientist, or budding historian, on the other hand, will always stand out over the well-rounded applicant.

Cornell University Application Requirements

Cornell accepts The Common Application but not the Coalition Application. Students must submit a counselor letter of recommendation, two teacher letters of recommendation, their standardized test results, and Cornell-specific supplemental essay responses.

Who to Ask For Letters of Recommendation

Applicants to Cornell should ask two teachers, ideally two junior year teachers in core subjects, in addition to their school counselor for letters of recommendation.

Does Cornell University Require an Alumni Interview?

No, Cornell does not conduct alumni interviews as part of the application process, with the exception of those students applying for Cornell’s architecture program.

What are Cornell’s Supplemental Essay Topics?

Essays are one of the most important aspects of a competitive college application. In addition to The Common Application’s Personal Statement or the Coalition essay, Cornell applicants have to complete the Cornell supplemental essay questions, a.k.a. “The First-Year Writing Supplement.” 

All Cornell applicants must respond to the following question:

We all contribute to, and are influenced by, the communities that are meaningful to us. Share how you’ve been shaped by one of the communities you belong to.

Define community in the way that is most meaningful to you. This community example can be drawn from your family, school, workplace, activities or interests, or any other group you belong to. (350 word limit)

Cornell University Application Deadlines

Cornell’s two admissions rounds are termed Early Decision and Regular Decision. 

Early Decision applications are due on November 1st of each year. Admission through this round is binding. Regular Decision applications are typically due on January 2nd of each year.
