1. Despite What They Might Say, Williams Does Care About Demonstrated Interest

It’s time to dispel a major misconception about elite college admissions. Almost all highly selective colleges consider Demonstrated Interest, but very few own up to it! It should come as no surprise that places like Williams want to fill their campuses with enthusiastic students who really want to be there. Why would they roll the dice by admitting students who might not matriculate?

Beyond making a binding commitment to attend by applying Early Decision, to demonstrate your interest in Williams, you can do a few things. First and foremost, schedule a tour of campus. It takes a lot of effort to trek to the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts, but admissions officers love to see it. So don’t be afraid to visit campus and make your presence known by attending an information session for prospective students, meeting with current students to discuss life at Williams, and asking practical questions during your guided tour.

When it comes time to fill out your Common App., be sure to fill out as many contacts as possible under the questions tab of the Williams application, and list them according to the degree of interest they convey. For example, learning about Williams on social media is relatively low-hanging fruit, whereas meeting with a Williams student or admissions representative shows that you went out of your way to learn more. So list your points of contact with Williams in descending order, with the highest-effort first.

2. Don’t Be Afraid to Showcase Your Diversity

Williams has historically struggled with assembling a diverse cohort of students relative to many of its peer institutions. Some schools boast highly diverse student bodies, but Williams has always lagged a little behind. If you can contribute to the diversity of the student body, highlight what makes you different in your college essays via the Roberts Loophole, a legal workaround to the 2023 SCOTUS ruling ostensibly outlawing the use of race-based criteria in college admissions decision-making.

Williams’ only supplemental writing prompt consists of an optional academic paper. Here is what The Common App says:

’Williams does not require a writing supplement. However, some students feel they do their best writing in an academic context rather than through narrative pieces like admission applications. If you are interested in submitting an example of your academic writing from the last year, you may share a 3-5 page paper here. The paper may be creative or analytical, can cover any topic, and need not be graded. We ask that you include a description of the assignment or prompt. Please do not submit lab reports.’
