The University of Texas at Austin is one of the world’s foremost research universities, with thousands of students competing for the opportunity to join the campus each year. And yet, we don’t know their Early Action acceptance rate. We know that applicants typically receive a significant admissions boost when applying in any given college’s Early round, but we don’t know how much of a boost those applying to this flagship member of the University of Texas system get since the figures aren’t publicly released. However, that’s not where this story ends, as there’s still much we at Ivy Coach can share about how UT Austin conducts its Early Action process.

UT Austin Hasn’t Published Any Early Action Acceptance Rate Data

What do we know about Early Action admissions to UT Austin? We don’t know the acceptance rate, as this data is not publicly available, nor do we know the specific number of applicants. We do, however, know that the overall acceptance rate for the UT Austin Class of 2029 was roughly 22%. We also know that the way UT Austin conducted the EA process this past year left many applicants reeling.

UT Austin Left Applicants in the Dark — Or Did They?

As we await the data for the Class of 2030, we thought we’d also share our take on the news cycle that swarmed Texas during this past admissions cycle. The Daily Texan news report on the subject pretty much sums it up: “UT Early Action applicants report a large amount of deferrals, decisions delayed.” As it turns out, during the past admissions cycle, UT Austin admissions officers opted not to send rejection letters to Early Action applicants. Instead, thousands of applicants were either given acceptances or deferrals. 

To make matters more complicated, those who were deferred weren’t explicitly told they were “deferred” in UT Austin’s initial communication. Only after much confusion and frustration did UT Austin clarify that these students, who received their deferrals on the anticipated January 15th deadline, could expect final decisions to be rendered on February 15th.

We at Ivy Coach have great sympathy for applicants who receive deferrals and must navigate the admissions limbo while anxiously awaiting results from other colleges; in fact, we take pride in helping many students earn admission to the schools that initially deferred them. That said, we hate it when schools string an unnecessary number of students along with deferrals that will largely go nowhere except rejection. And this isn’t just a problem that plagues the University of Texas system (we’re looking at you, Harvard University!).
