Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is the STEM-forward research university that many academically ambitious students dream of attending. Admissions officers at RPI understand very well that their school is the ideal destination for many students out there, and they’ve sought to separate the chaff from the wheat by distinguishing between the applicants who really mean business and those who aren’t as ecstatic about the prospect of attending. And how? By allowing applicants to self-segregate based on demonstrated interest into four separate admissions rounds: Early Decision I, Early Decision II, Early Action, and Regular Decision.

But wait, Ivy Coach, what does Demonstrated Interest have to do with all of this? We’re glad you asked! Despite what admissions officers would have you believe, demonstrated interest is indeed a huge factor in which students wind up with acceptance letters. RPI is no exception. Early Decision I applicants, who apply the earliest and make a binding commitment to attend if admitted, are rewarded for their commitment to RPI with a higher acceptance rate than ED II applicants and EA applicants, who are, in turn, admitted at a higher rate than Regular Decision applicants.

But will these trends bear out for the ongoing Class of 2030 admission cycle? And does the historical data at RPI substantiate this claim? Let’s review:

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Early Decision Admission Statistics Over 7+ Years

Taking a gander at the compiled acceptance rate statistics for RPI over the last few admission cycles, everything is consistent with Ivy Coach’s projections except for the Class of 2028. For the most part, the combined Early Decision I and II acceptance rate at RPI has been greater than the overall acceptance rate (taking ED I, ED II, EA, and RD into account), but this is not the case for the Class of 2028, in which 57.9% of ED applicants earned admission to RPI compared to 63.4% of total applicants. Note that no Early Action data has, to date, been reported.

While data from the Classes of 2029 and 2030 would go a long way in clarifying what’s happening here, we at Ivy Coach would chalk this discrepancy up to a fluke. There is absolutely no reason to take the Class of 2028 data and run with the idea that ED applicants are at a disadvantage compared to RD applicants. The idea, quite simply, is ludicrous.

Regarding the recently admitted Early Decision I applicants for the Class of 2030 (as well as any of the Early applicants within the Class of 2029, for that matter), since there is no publicly available data, there’s not much of an interpretation to make at the moment. For this reason, we call on RPI admissions officers to be more forthcoming about their acceptance rate data. After all, it behoves them to incentivize more students to apply via an Early round, particularly ED I or II, as such applicants are bound to attend if admitted and thus drive up yield rate, or the proportion of admitted applicants who end up enrolling.
