Indiana University Bloomington is the flagship campus of the Indiana University system and a compelling choice for students seeking a not-very-selective college with a stellar reputation. Ranked #73 in the nation by the US News & World Report, Indiana University had an overall acceptance rate of 75.89% for the Class of 2029. However, would you believe us if we told you that there is an entire cohort of Indiana applicants who actually get in at an even higher acceptance rate? That’s right, we’re talking about students who take advantage of IU’s Early Action program.

Indiana maintains its EA program for students who are relatively sure they want to make a home in Bloomington and want to gain an admissions edge. Applying via Early Action still confers an advantage without being binding, making it a wise choice for prospective students. 

Applying to Indiana University is a strategic move, to be sure, but unfortunately, IU has not publicly shared acceptance rate data for its EA program. But there is still plenty for Ivy Coach to dissect and unpack about this Early round admissions cycle as the Class of 2030 awaits their forthcoming admission decisions.

Even though we don’t have the data to substantiate this claim, Ivy Coach’s highly educated guess is that EA applicants get into IU at a slightly higher rate than their Regular Decision counterparts. And why do Early Action applicants have this advantage? They demonstrate their interest in the university by throwing their hat in the ring early on. Whether admissions officers at the proud home of the Hoosiers will admit it or not, demonstrated interest is a crucial factor in the EA advantage. In the absence of reliable data on the Indiana Early Action acceptance rate, Ivy Coach’s ability to estimate the success of these applicants is limited. However, there is more to this story, which we will explore below.

A Look Back on the Indiana University Early Action Class of 2029

For schools with an Early Decision (ED) program that contractually binds accepted students to enroll, the ED acceptance rate is usually available in the school’s Common Data Sets (CDS), which serve as the primary source of publicly accessible admissions data. However, for Early Action programs, this data is not included in the CDS. Additionally, Indiana has not issued any press statements regarding the Early Action acceptance rate for recent admission cycles.

What we do know about the current first years at IU is limited to what was published in the Class of 2029 Profile, which covers the class as a whole (and not EA applicants in particular). 

According to the Office of Admissions:

“42% graduated high school with a 4.0 GPA or better

50% Indiana residents with students from all 92 counties

118 countries of residence

83% of students arrived with some college credit.”
