Grinnell is a highly selective liberal arts college that draws the kind of student who seeks academic rigor and a close-knit campus community, but not necessarily the hustle and bustle of a huge research university. We at Ivy Coach are huge proponents of the liberal arts college experience, and we think it’s a shame that more families don’t consider these schools as viable options. 

Grinnell is a particularly stellar example of everything we value in these schools: high-quality teaching, faculty who aren’t tied up with research and are actually able to focus on their students, and a rich culture of traditions and festivities on campus. But considering all of these perks, does it come as any surprise that getting into Grinnell is no walk in the park? Indeed, with acceptance rates dwindling to record lows in recent years, Grinnell requires prospective applicants to strategize if they want to optimize their odds of admission.

Fortunately, there’s a way for students who are entering their senior year of high school without a shadow of a doubt that they’d like to end up at Grinnell to give their applications a fast-track to admission. We’re speaking, of course, about the Early Decision rounds offered by Grinnell. This binding admission process comes in two forms: Early Decision I and Early Decision II. While it doesn’t hurt to demonstrate your interest in attending Grinnell by applying ED II after an ED I round rejection at another school, applying ED I is the only true way to seriously boost your admissions odds. But more on that in a second.

Grinnell Early Decision Admission Statistics Over 10 Years

In our survey of the Early Decision admission data over the last ten years, we noticed not so much a downward trend in the combined ED I and ED II acceptance rate as a general gesture towards lower acceptance rates that has really only emerged in the most recent cycles. But we invite you to hone in on the Class of 2029 data to get the real tea. This is the only cycle for which we have a separated ED I and ED II rate, and the data unequivocally supports our assertion that it’s easier to earn admission via ED I than ED II. . . by a roughly threefold factor!

In any event, no matter which ED round you choose, you can rest assured that your application will be given a more lenient look than it would have in the Regular Decision round.

Breakdown of Grinnell College’s Class of 2030 Early Decision Admits

Unfortunately, we’re still waiting on the data covering the Early Decision I admits for the Class of 2030. However, unlike many other schools of its caliber, Grinnell does share a little bit about how it conducts its admission process in the Early round on its website, and we found it quite illuminating:

“Does applying in Early Decision increase my odds of being admitted?

Historically, yes. Over the past four years, our Early Decision admission rate has been around 40%, while our Regular Decision admission rate has been around 11%.”
