US News & World Report ranks Williams College as the #1 liberal arts school in the country. But they won’t feel like they’re missing out on the metropolitan and cultural experiences of their peers in big cities: Williams is right around the corner from impressive cultural meccas, The Clark Institute and the Mass MoCA, and students have ample opportunity to work with each museum’s resources. Williams College has a $3.65 billion endowment, giving Williams an endowment-per-student ratio on par with those of Yale and Princeton. It’s also nearly as competitive as these Ivy League schools, with an acceptance rate at 8.3%. 

For students who want prestige without compromising community feeling, Williams is arguably the best choice. If you’re reading this, you’re probably wondering what kind of GPA your child needs in order to get into this selective, elite liberal arts college. Unfortunately, there isn’t a clear answer to that very good question. Williams has never reported the GPA of its incoming first-year students to the Common Data Set Initiative. They’re not just looking at report cards and SAT scores because they don’t want a campus full of only good test takers. They want movers and shakers, students who are going to leave a mark on campus, and grow into alumni who advance Williams’s already strong national reputation and global standing. They’re pursuing students with excellence. While academic record is the most typical way to demonstrate this excellence, it isn’t the only way. Students may have accomplishments for which they have ranked nationally, collegiate-level research experience, rare artistic talents, or a singular perspective that no other applicant can bring to campus. That’s just one example of many as to why a student with a lower GPA can stand out from a student who’s been up to nothing but schoolwork for the past four years.
