Hillary Rodham Clinton, Madeleine Albright, news anchor Diane Sawyer, and When Harry Met Sally director Norah Ephron all count themselves among the alumnae of Wellesley College. Founded in 1870, Wellesley College has been empowering women to become world leaders for over 150 years now. Located in the eponymous Massachusetts town of Wellesley, an idyll just twenty minutes outside of Boston, the school enjoys a small but beautiful campus that is well connected by school shuttles to other Greater Boston Area powerhouses like Harvard and MIT. Wellesley women can even cross-register with courses at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. 

Students at Wellesley College get to enjoy the school’s host of quaint, quirky traditions. At the beginning of the year, Flower Sunday welcomes first-year students onto campus as “big sisters” hand them bouquets. And Wellesley College is the halfway point for the globally famous Boston Marathon every April. On Marathon Monday, the campus is called the Scream Tunnel because Wellesley students line up along Central Street to offer their support for the runners, quite loudly. Finally, for future chefs and food critics, it’s worth noting that Wellesley takes credit for not one but two famous recipes. Wellesley was founded by Henry Durant, a man who declared that “pies, lies, and doughnuts should never have a place at Wellesley College.” Unfortunately for him, his female students were more free-thinking and resourceful than that, and so Wellesley Fudge Cake was born. It’s a decadent layer cake with a generous coating of fudge frosting. If chocolate isn’t your thing, Wellesley Peppermint Stick Pie has been a unique but beloved staple for over a century at Wellesley.

Wellesley Doesn’t Publish Its Students’ High School GPA Statistics

Marathons and desserts aside, Wellesley College is a competitive school with an acceptance rate of 14%. It ranks number seven among liberal arts colleges on US News & World Report’s list.

Wellesley College has never reported the GPA of its incoming first-year students to The Common Data Set Initiative, a voluntary effort among colleges to help all of those involved with a student’s transition into higher education. Academic record is the first and most important thing they consider. In other words, they are weighing your GPA heavily in their consideration. But personal statement, letters of recommendation, extracurricular background, interview, and special talents are weighed as well. 

At the end of the day, Wellesley wants to admit young women who are going to become leaders in the world. They want students who will contribute to their campus community and alumnae who will enhance their reputation nationally and globally. While academic performance is the most common way to reflect this type of excellence and potential, it’s not the only way.
