The motto for Washington and Lee University is Non Incautus Futuri, Latin for “not unmindful of the future.” We’d beg to differ. If Washington and Lee University really were ‘not unmindful’ of the future, they’d report the GPA data for their enrolled students to The Common Data Set Initiative. In the past 20 years, they’ve never done so. 

Washington and Lee University is a selective school in Lexington, Virginia. With an endowment of around $2 billion and only around 1,900 undergraduate students, Washington and Lee has an impressive per-student endowment. The campus is located near the Blue Ridge Mountains and a three-hour drive from Washington D.C. In 2023, the Wall Street Journal ranked Washington and Lee the number one school in the country for career preparation. Among liberal arts colleges, it is the top producer of Rhodes scholarships and the seventh producer of Fulbright scholarships. And it’s not just prestige. Washington and Lee University (perhaps unlike comparable institutions in the stuffy Northeast) is a beacon of Southern hospitality. The school is known for ‘the Speaking tradition,’ in which students are expected to greet each other and their professors when passing them by on campus. Yes, even the ones they don’t know! So, you’ll be sure to feel welcomed on campus.

Washington and Lee University Could Use a Dose of Statistical Transparency 

The Common Data Set Initiative is a voluntary effort among colleges and universities to improve the quality and accuracy of information provided to all involved in a student’s transition into higher education. We’ve combed through every single one of Washington and Lee’s available Common Data sets, dating back to 2005, and not once have they reported the GPA breakdown of their incoming classes. Washington and Lee University’s Acceptance Rate

Last year, for the Washington and Lee University Class of 2029, the acceptance rate was 13.5% This makes Washington and Lee a highly selective college. 

Interestingly, despite this slim number and the school’s impressive standing, it has a somewhat low yield. Of the 1,216 students accepted to Washington and Lee, only 499 enrolled, meaning only 41% of accepted students chose to enroll.

In their words, it’s a “whole-person” review: “We want to get to know you and how you’ll contribute to the life of the university.” They break this down into component parts, with academic record being the first and most important thing they consider.
