The esteemed public research university in Charlottesville, Virginia, received a record tally of 82,118 applications, far exceeding previous admissions cycles. This victorious showing on the University of Virginia’s part has been rounded out by a highly selective, record-setting 12.53% acceptance rate for the most recently admitted cohort. University of Virginia’s Class of 2030 in Historical Perspective

The admissions data in UVA’s Common Data Set archive admittedly doesn’t stretch particularly far back, but even for the last four years, a clear trend line has emerged: applications are steadily increasing at UVA, while the acceptance rate appears to be decreasing. UVA diehards may note that the acceptance rate for domestic Virginians versus non-Virginians is a bit higher, as UVA is a public university that legally must give preference to in-state applicants to receive state funding.

For those enrolling in fall 2025, two-thirds were Virginians and only one-third were from out of the state (or the country, for that matter!). According to a press release straight from the source itself, “Nearly 5,000 first-year and transfer students are joining the UVA family. They come from 98 countries. The youngest is 16 and the oldest is 64. Nearly 66% are from Virginia. Fifty-three percent of UVA’s transfer students come from Virginia community colleges.”

According to reporting by The Daily Cavalier, UVA’s student-run newspaper, “Virginia residents accounted for 6,377 of applicants, receiving 472 offers of admission — a 7.4 percent acceptance rate — while 1,423 offers of admission were extended to out-of-state applications from a pool of 20,390 — a 6.97 percent acceptance rate.”

Moreover, “The total applicant pool across all cycles — early decision, early action and regular decision — reached 82,118 this year, a 27.4 percent increase from last year. Of those, 19,964 were Virginia residents and 62,154 were out-of-state applicants. Virginia residents received 4,317 total offers of admission, reflecting a 22 percent offer rate, while out-of-state applicants received 5,970 offers — a 10 percent offer rate. Last year’s in-state offer rate was 23 percent, and the out-of-state offer rate was 12.5 percent.”
