The Ivy Coach Daily
University of Richmond GPA Requirements
The University of Richmond has an acceptance rate of 23%. With around 3,000 undergraduates and located on Westhampton Lake, the University of Richmond is a small, suburban liberal arts college just six miles outside of the city from which it takes its name. And, if you’re into the macabre, the University of Richmond has rare papers from Edgar Allen Poe, who spun his dark tales while living in Richmond.
If you’ve found yourself on this page, that means you’re wondering what kind of GPA you need to get into the University of Richmond. Well, look no further. We at Ivy Coach are going to get into the numbers down below. We’ve pulled these numbers from The Common Data Set Initiative, a voluntary effort among colleges and universities to improve the quality and accuracy of information provided to all involved in a student’s transition into higher education. In the past three years, the University of Richmond has reported the GPA of enrolled students twice: for the Class of 2029 and the Class of 2027. Richmond did not report the GPA breakdown of the Class of 2028.

Further Context on GPAs of URichmond Students
What do all these numbers mean? Last year, for the University of Richmond Class of 2029, even though 22% of incoming first-year students had perfect GPAs, 23% had low GPAs in the 3.25 to 3.49 range. A little over half (52%) of the class had decent GPAs in the 3.5 to 3.99 range. Only 2% had dire GPAs below 3.24.
Two years before that, 21.67% of the University of Richmond Class of 2029 had a perfect GPA, just a little bit less than the 26.71% of incoming first-years who had a decent GPA between 3.5 and 3.74.
This makes the University of Richmond somewhat of an anomaly among highly selective universities, whose accepted students tend to hover in the higher GPA brackets. The University of Richmond has a holistic admissions review process. Admissions officers assess personal statements, extracurricular involvement, personal integrity, life experience, special talents, and more. “There is no typical applicant and no simple formula to guarantee acceptance,” they state. Really, what admissions officers are looking for are students who are going to contribute to the campus community, the university’s research output, its impact on the nation, and its reputation across the globe. While these types of students are usually high grade earners, that’s not always the case.
Can Students Get into URichmond with a Low GPA?
The short answer: it’s possible. The long answer: it depends on so many other variables. The high school attended and the rigor of a student’s coursework change the context greatly. A low GPA in an extremely competitive, rigorous school means something different than a GPA in a school that doesn’t even offer challenging coursework. There’s also a student’s extracurriculars, essays, letters of recommendations, and all the deciding factors that make a holistic review process holistic. It’s important to note that many students with low GPAs usually have their foot in the door through other means. We’d rager that many are recruited athletes and development cases. Moreover, the University of Richmond regularly rejects applicants with perfect GPAs and test scores.
