If you’re reading this, you’re probably wondering what kind of GPA your child needs to get into the University of Miami. Well, look no further. We’re going to get into those numbers below.

Further Context on the GPAs of Miami Students 

Okay, you’ve seen the charts now, but what exactly do those figures and percentages mean? One-fifth of the University of Miami Class of 2029 had a perfect high school report card. 42% of incoming first-year students had a really high GPA between 3.75 and 3.99. And almost a quarter came onto campus with a GPA between 3.5 and 3.74. A small 8.8% of the class had a GPA between 3.25 and 3.49. 

The University of Miami Class of 2028 saw a very similar pattern. Again, one-fifth of the University of Miami Class of 2028 stepped onto campus with a 4.0 high school GPA. 45% of that year’s incoming class had a GPA in that 3.75 to 3.99 bracket. And, again that year, about a quarter came onto campus with a GPA between 3.5 and 3.74. A mere 9% of the class had a GPA between 3.25 and 3.49. 

And let’s look three years back at the University of Miami Class of 2027. 22% of enrolled first-year students had a perfect GPA in high school, a little over a fifth again. 42% of the Class of 2027 had a GPA between 3.75 and 3.99. And about a quarter had a GPA between 3.5 and 3.74. Finally, 7% had a GPA between 3.25 and 3.99. 

You might be the parent of a child with a low GPA, in which case your eyes might be stuck like glue onto the 1.2% of the University of Miami Class of 2029 that came onto campus with a GPA between 2.5 and 2.99. Or, depending on how low we’re talking, you might even be looking at the 0.4% of that class who had a GPA between 2.0 and 2.49. Maybe even that infinitesimal 0.1% of the Class of 2029 who nonetheless strutted onto campus with a measly 1.0 to 1.99 GPA. Before you get too excited, those numbers are clearly outliers. Moreover, we would wager that those students had other ways of getting in. They may be recruited athletes, for example. Or they may be development cases, students whose families have donated tons and tons of money to the University of Miami. 

Can Students Get into Miami with a Low GPA?

It’s possible, but it’s unlikely. You saw those numbers. Well over half of the last three first-year classes at the University of Miami had a GPA above 3.75. 

That being said, college admissions isn’t just a numbers game. (If it were, our jobs would be so much easier.) The University of Miami, like most other top institutions in the country, maintains a holistic admissions review process. As they put it, it’s a “whole person review.” Students are not just SAT scores and GPAs. Instead, admissions officers at the University of Miami are looking at every part of the application:“The ‘softer’ parts of the application (letters, extracurricular history, and essay) help us answer the question, ‘How can this student contribute to our community?’” The most important part of holistic review is context, the University of Miami says. If a student’s grades dipped the year they moved from one country to another, they will take that into consideration. If a student took only two AP classes, that would mean one thing if there were twelve AP classes on offer, and something else entirely if there were only three AP classes at their school.
