Further Context on the GPA of UC Santa Barbara Students 

In case you’re not a charts person, let’s talk through what each of those figures and percentages means. Over 90% of the UCSB Class of 2029 came onto the oceanside campus with a spotless report card. That’s almost the entire class. 6.14% of the UC Santa Barbara Class of 2029 had high GPAs between 3.75 and 3.99. A mere 2.86% came in with a GPA between 3.5 and 3.74. 

Things were pretty similar for the University of California, Santa Barbara Class of 2028. Again that year, 90% of incoming first-year students had perfect high school GPAs. 6.9% of the UCSB Class of 2028 had a GPA between 3.75 and 3.99. And 2.8% had a GPA between 3.5 and 3.74. 

Rounding us out is the UC Santa Barbara Class of 2027, in which 88% of students had 4.0 GPAs. 7.37% of incoming first-year students landed in the 3.75 to 3.99 bracket. And 3.71% were in the 3.5 to 3.74 bracket. 

In brief, this means that the University of California, Santa Barbara tends to admit mostly students with perfect or excellent high school GPAs. 

Can Students Get into the UC Santa Barbara with a Low GPA?

You might be the parent of a child with a middling and/or low GPA, in which case your eyes might be stuck like glue onto the 0.43% of incoming first-year students in the Class of 2029 who stepped onto campus with a GPA between 3.25 and 3.49. Or, depending on how low that GPA is, you might even have your gaze turned to the 0.16% of the Class of 2029 who had a GPA between 3.0 and 3.24. Maybe you’re keeping your fingers crossed over the 0.04% of the Class of 2029 that came in with a high school GPA between 2.5 and 2.99. 

Lest you put the cart before the horse, those numbers are clearly outliers: as we discussed, around 90% of the past three enrolled classes at UCSB had perfect high school GPAs. Moreover, we would wager that those students with low GPAs had other ways of getting in. They may have been recruited athletes: the star quarterback or one of the country’s fastest swimmers, for example. 

That being said, GPA is just one puzzle piece among many. The University of California system lists 13 different factors they consider during their review, including “outstanding work in one or more special projects” and “special talents, achievements, and awards in a particular field.”
