With the Class of 2030 recently receiving their admission decisions, many of us are wondering whether this year’s cycle set any new records for selectivity or class size. Unfortunately, that data has yet to be publicly reported. UMass Amherst Class of 2030 in Historical Perspective

Over the last 16 years or so of admissions data, UMass Amherst has not become considerably more difficult to get into, which is quite an unexpected finding, given that the prevailing trend among elite colleges has been declining acceptance rates during this period. There was perhaps a slight decrease during the first half of this window, with acceptance rates ranging from a high of 68.70% for the Class of 2015 to a low of 57.49% for the Class of 2021, but the last eight years have produced somewhat haphazard results that defy interpretation.

We’re still awaiting the Class of 2030, but over the past five admission cycles, the average acceptance rate has been 61.29%, while the average applicant pool size has ballooned to 48,359. Despite drawing larger numbers of applicants each year, UMass Amherst hasn’t set any recent records for acceptance rate because the size of the cohort of admitted students has increased in tandem with the total volume of applicants, hinting at the possibility that the yield rate (or proportion of admitted students who choose to enroll) has fallen slightly over the last few years.
