UCLA Acceptance Rate and Application Trends

Notice a trend in UCLA’s admissions figures? Except for five times over the last 25 years, UCLA’s first-year applications have increased year-over-year, often dramatically.

One of those four occasions was for the Class of 2027, when applications fell from an all-time high of 149,815 for the Class of 2026 to 145,910 for the Class of 2027. But the most recent cycle on record, the Class of 2029 cohort, also saw one such decline, from 146,250 applications in the prior year to 145,086 applications last year.

Still, UCLA’s acceptance rate is nothing to be scoffed at, recent dips in application volume aside. UCLA’s overall admission rate has plummeted over the last quarter of a century, from 28.96% for the Class of 2004 to 8.57% for the Class of 2026 (it stood at 8.73% for the Class of 2027, 8.96% for the Class of 2028, and 9.41% for the Class of 2029). Since the Class of 2004, the admission rate has dropped year-over-year all but eight times (with a couple of bumps in the road, like for the Classes of 2009 and 2015 when the acceptance rate jumped up fairly significantly). 

However, could recent increases in the acceptance rate be a sign that the surge of interest in UCLA is starting to level off? It’s worth noting that UCLA routinely sets records for attracting the largest applicant pools in higher education. The figure of 145,086 applicants is a number most schools, highly selective or not, could only dream of. The future will reveal whether interest in this prestigious public research university has peaked or if more hopeful students will vie for admission in the coming cycles.
